Over the past four years, we've had an artist from Drawing Change visually represent the key takeaways from our conferences. This graphic was produced during the keynote "Land and Economic Reconciliation: Leading Indigenous Perspectives on Development," with Karen Restoule, Kimberly Murray, and Chief Willie Sellars. Here are some of the key takeaways illustrated in the graphic: 1?? Survivor Recognition: Honouring survivors is a key step toward reconciliation. 2?? Truth Unveiling: Indigenous families have the right to know the truth about unmarked graves. 3?? Balancing Act: Strive to balance stewardship and economic opportunities for sustainable development. 4?? Progress in Unity: Celebrate progress and engagement; uplift and learn from one another. 5?? Empowering Communities: Prioritize better education in Indigenous communities. 6?? Cultural Exchange: Increase pow-wow attendance for cultural exchange and understanding.

I came across this by Heather A Meyer a couple of weeks ago - some really interesting perspectives on building a sense of community in international schools. I really like the sense of the global imaginary as an ‘imagined global community’, in the same way Benedict Anderson talks about Nations as ‘imagined communities’ 'The global imaginary gives meaning to the social world. It creates boundaries that aid in organising and conceptualising how members perceive themselves and others. The ‘global’ and ‘local’ are very abstract and relational concepts, which can ultimately be shaped and contextualised in innumerable ways. This is one of the reasons why the global imaginary can thrive within the international school system (and beyond)—it is relevant and applicable anywhere. The link between local/global really interested me (I have used the phrase 'glocalisation' in my work). As Meyer goes on: 'The network of international school communities can therefore be reimagined and reconstructed as a global network of localities'. Ways in which we conceptualise interactions between the local and the global (and links between these key cultural reference points) are critical if we are successfully able to equip students not only able to cross national boundaries in their future lives but more importantly to bring peoples from differing cultures and mindsets together.

I think it is my esteemed colleague Adam Strom's birthday today, or at least that is what LinkedIn tells me, so I would like to take this opportunity to give him and his organization, Re-Imagining Migration a proper shoutout. What is this organization doing? Re-Imagining Migration seeks to transform the educational ecosystem to ensure that immigrant-origin youth, their peers, and the communities in which they inhabit flourish in a global society increasingly shaped by migration and demographic diversification. Needless to say, in times like these, this goal is incredibly important. Immigrant-origin students need to feel a sense of belonging, particularly when there is so much negativity surrounding them and the voices of many adults in public spaces and forums have not been welcoming. Teachers need to understand how best to support them and help them to thrive. Take a moment to learn about Re-Imagining Migration as you consider the ways the education ecosystem needs to stand by and with these students. https://lnkd.in/dzjCvsaF

"To better promote social mobility, higher ed needs to reject the longstanding idea that exclusivity is excellence." --Panelist remark from a The Chronicle of Higher Education virtual forum, “Sharpening the Social-Mobility Mission”, https://lnkd.in/gZvfJF9E. Well-stated! ?? ?? I'd go further--that educators and educational systems can be deemed 'excellent' mostly by their results helping any learner to achieve their next step, not just the most exclusive. For example, as an adult educator, it was intensely more powerful helping pre-literate adults become readers and writers in a second language--even moreso than helping advanced English learners to pass the citizenship test or GED. There is so much power and potential unleashed when learning moves forward for those who have not had access to it. It is important to educate the more educated, but that's relatively marginal value-add.
