November 15 is America Recycles Day—a day to recognize the importance of recycling and its positive impact on our environment. The US EPA has set an ambitious goal to raise the US recycling rate to 50% by 2030. To reach this goal, it’s crucial to recycle the right items. Cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans, and paper are typically accepted, but items like plastic bags are often mistakenly placed in recycling bins. Check with your local recycling provider to confirm what’s accepted and help prevent contamination. Let's all play our part—every action counts!? Recycling supports jobs in waste and resource management, conserves natural resources like timber and water, conserves landfill space, and so much more.? SWANA has consistently advocated for improved recycling infrastructure, including support for US legislation – the Recycling Infrastructure Accessibility Act (S. 1189/H.R. 6159) and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (S. 1194/H.R. 4040). A heartfelt thank you to SWANA members, especially those in Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and recycling communications and collections who work tirelessly to keep recycling systems moving. Your dedication is essential to achieving a more sustainable future. You make recycling happen! The theme of this year's Recycle Week has been 'Rescue Me', focusing on rescuing recyclable items from going into the general waste bin - which links in nicely with the upcoming Simpler Recycling legislation, set to improve UK recycling rates from next year. Here's some need-to-know information about Simpler Recycling: ? The legislation comes into effect in March 2025 for businesses (Local Authorities have until March 2026 to implement the changes for residents). ? Businesses and other non-household premises with 10 or more full-time employees are all affected. ? The legislation requires plastic, paper and card, glass, metals and food waste to be separated from general waste. Simpler Recycling is designed to boost the UK's circular economy, by improving recycling rates and regenerating resources. We're working with our customers to make sure they implement the necessary changes ready for when the legislation comes into effect. Let me know below if you have any questions or want to have a conversation with one of our waste and recycling experts to make sure your business is prepared. #SimplerRecycling #Recycling #RegenerateResources #CircularEconomy

We need to take a long, hard look at our recycling policies. A good place would be to go back to what was originally the FOUR R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair. That last one never really caught on. Why? Because waste-inducing functional obsolescence is built into most consumer products. https://lnkd.in/gtqwFYrY

According to the Environmental Council of the States Texas has a lot of room to improve when it comes to the amount of waste ending up in our landfills. Here's a few tips: ?? Remember the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ??When recycling, do it correctly. Keep items dry, clean, and empty. Check what can and cannot be put in the recycling bins. Utilize your local recycling recycling center. ??Buy secondhand and/or purchase items made from recycled materials. This promotes a circular economy, with fewer items finding their way to landfills! ?? #recycleright #texasrecycles #reduceereuserecycle

At CCPB, we’re committed to reducing our impact on the environment. We’ve done our research and found these tips on how you can start recycling at home.? 1. Rinse bottles and recyclable packaging before depositing in your recycling bin.? 2. Flatten bottles as they take up less space in bins and trucks. 3. Keep the caps on so that they don’t become lost or become litter. All businesses should be thinking how they can recycle more. not just for today.
It's Global Recycling Day! ? #BCHS has partnered with Rubbermaid Commercial Products Europe to work together and improve sustainability by implementing multi-stream waste management and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. With visible waste separation bins, encourage more recycling in your business, including highly visible signage. In Wales, from 6th April 2024, new legislation will mean material that is prime for recycling must be separated prior to collection for processing off-site and kept separate throughout waste processing activities. This global recycling day, join us in becoming more sustainable through recycling solutions and be part of the change! Did you know our councils have introduced new recycling rules? Climate action is front of mind for many of us, and effective recycling is a great way to ensure the items and products we throw away have the opportunity to live a second life and stay out of landfills. From 1 February, new rules for Council recycling bins were announced to standardise local council recycling across Aotearoa. It’s important to note that the list of exclusions does not mean these items aren’t recyclable – it just means you will need to visit your local community recycling centre. This means your recycling bin only accepts: - Glass bottles and jars, - Paper and cardboard, - Plastic trays, bottles, and containers (grades 1, 2, and 5 only), - Tin, steel, and aluminium cans. Items that won’t be accepted include: - Small items less than 50mm (bottle caps, small cosmetics, spice containers), - Aerosol cans, - Liquid paperboard (Tetrapak and juice boxes), - Plastics 3, 4, 6 and 7, - All lids, - Items over 4 litres. Remember, before you recycle, empty and rinse your items and place them in your roadside bin – and don’t forget to take all lids off bottles and containers and place them in your regular rubbish bin, or down to your local recycling centre (check individual rules and guidelines). Single-use alkaline batteries such as AA, AAA, C and D can be dropped off at Bunnings or your local recycling centre, do not put these items in your rubbish or recycling bin as they can be hazardous. We're proud to share Amherst Label's Liner Recycling Program! ?? Established in early 2023, their program has made a significant impact in reducing waste and promoting sustainability. With 12 drop-off locations across New England accepting Clear PET liners, they are making it easier for the local label community to participate in recycling efforts. Check out these statistics by filling just 1 Gaylord: - Weight recycled: 2064 lbs. - CO2 emission savings (vs landfill disposal): 3873 lbs. - CO2 emission savings (vs incineration): 524 lbs. By recycling your label liners, it is not only diverting waste from landfills but also reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment. Every contribution makes a difference! Americans throw 76% of their recyclables in to the trash! Surprising? But Not. And in no way should other countries point the finger, as they probably face similar numbers and need to address the underlying issue - that recycling (even if done right), will not solve the single use waste crisis. Some fascinating insights from the article. ?? SCARY - with rigid plastics, only about 1% of 1.5 million tons a year is captured and turned into something else. ?? Residential recycling rates below 10% in states including Montana (9%), Mississippi (8%), North Dakota (9%) and Alabama (9%). ?? California only recycles 37% of what’s possible, and leaves 3.2 million tons a year of potentially recyclable material for landfills. ?? Only 37% of multifamily homes have access to proper recycling services. ?? The best-case scenario is cardboard, with 32% of it recycled. Startling yet a reality on single use waste that will only get worse. Over course I'm bias to more reuse systems, but how long will it take to get a some control of this before the planet turns in to a dump.
