??Discover the latest insights from VITO's recent study in collaboration with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which explores the potential of the Antwerp chemical cluster to embrace recycled and renewable raw materials as alternatives to fossil feedstocks. ??The goal? To build a sustainable, resilient, and future-proof industrial cluster that anchors #Antwerp as a vital part of European industry. ?? Key Findings from the Study: ?? Belgium is a leader in plastic recycling, with a 39% rate. However, there’s still potential to reduce incineration and expand beyond mechanical recycling. ?? The study proposes the Antwerp Model - a blueprint for defossilization and circularity - leveraging Antwerp’s role as the largest integrated chemical cluster in Europe and a hub for polymer production. ?? Steps Toward a Circular Hub: On September 18th, the first steps were taken to develop a circular hub, bringing together the full value chain in an interactive workshop. Discussions with industry associations essenscia, PolyMatters and Cefic highlighted both challenges and strengths, calling on companies to form a strong circular cluster. ?? The company has been able to reach a 49% cost saving of stretch film packaging, whilst also creating a reduction of more than eight tonnes of plastic usage on an annual basis. The company that is in charge of this project, started out as a university exercise within an entrepreneurship class and from there it developed into a business that is currently focused on creating plastics from olive pits. At the beginning, at Istanbul Technical University, a trio met and from there, seven years later, they have created a commercial-scale operation. This operation recycles olive pits and transforms them into bioplastics which are then able to be used in a multitude of products.
