State foresters across the U.S. are leveraging the new SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard to enhance urban forestry efforts. Supported by the National Association of State Foresters (NASF), the standard provides a framework for state agencies and communities to sustainably manage urban forests. The standard was developed collaboratively with input from NASF and other leading forestry and conservation organizations. With this endorsement, state foresters are using the standard to cultivate thriving urban forests nationwide. https://lnkd.in/efVXp3bC

Your 'vote' on Nelson City Council's forestry transition needed by 28 April. ?? ?? For the last four years I've been leading the local conversation on whether it's time for Nelson to take a different approach to reforestation of our Council-owned public reserves. Background here, https://lnkd.in/gEW94k6. Last year the Right Tree Right Place Taskforce, chaired by Dr Morgan Williams, reviewed Council's commercial forestry in our public recreation, landscape and conservation reserves, in the Maitai, Brook, Marsden and Roding water catchments. The taskforce recommended Council transition away from clearfell forestry, and replant diverse species for permanent afforestation, with the aim being, "A resilient, continuous canopy, forested landscape, rich in biodiversity, that supports the many values of the people of Te Tauihu and our future generations." Story here, https://lnkd.in/gkAy8MCc. Council accepted and unanimously supported the taskforce's report (story here, https://lnkd.in/gb2gWb_R), but now want to hear what the community think. The next critical step in securing the transition away from clearfell forestry in our public reserves, is through the Long Term Plan (LTP). Council is currently asking for submissions, and Council's Forestry Approach is one of the key issues for this LTP. A few minutes of your time is needed now (deadline is 28 April): There is one very brief question about whether you support the transition or not, and the opportunity to say why or why not. I encourage you to respond to this consultation, and share widely among your networks. We need to hear from as many people as possible to secure the forestry transition as recommended by the taskforce. Earlier this year, New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) and partners kicked off a $30-million USDA-funded grant program that supports climate-smart forestry incentives to accelerate carbon storage in working forests for a pilot group of landowners in New England, including large commercial forests, smaller family woodlots, and Tribal Nations forestlands. NEFF selected six properties in Maine for the 2024-2025 pilot, spanning approximately 12,000 combined acres of commercial forestland; the owners of these parcels are the first of three landowner cohorts that will go on to participate in NEFF’s five-year program. With over 80% of New England as forest, and only 22% permanently conserved, the region urgently needs integrated solutions, like this pilot effort, that simultaneously address the climate emergency while considering the ongoing demand for and reliance on wood products. In our latest issue, NEFF’s Tinsley Hunsdorfer and From the Ground Up publisher Marissa Latshaw share the details of this innovative program and the benefits of climate-smart forestry. https://buff.ly/4dN0v9w #conservation #newengland #northeast #landconservation #wwfc #climatesmart #forestmanagement #landmanagement #fromthegroundupne
