In a world where youth voices often struggle to break through, facing skepticism and underfunding, their initiatives remain undeterred. Yet, their impact on the global environmental and climate justice movement is undeniable. Despite the challenges they face, Bow Seat stands firm in our belief in the potential of young leaders to effect real change. Today, we proudly showcase the endeavors of our 2024 Bow Seat Fellowship cohort, each project brimming with innovation, determination, and a fierce commitment to action. Among them, three standout projects exemplify the power of youthful activism and environmental stewardship. ?? Cynthia Zhang and Tiffany Zhang: Monarchs Matter In a time where monarch butterflies teeter on the brink of extinction, Cynthia and Tiffany's project, Monarchs Matter, emerges as a beacon of hope. Their mission is clear: to raise awareness and spark action through the nurturing and tagging of monarch butterflies. By contributing to crucial research, cultivating milkweed, and promoting sustainable practices, they aim to galvanize a movement. Their strategy includes the development of a comprehensive online platform, impactful social media campaigns, and a series of educational initiatives, including the innovative Raise, Tag, and Release (RTR) Summer Program. ?? Javie Vinze Barcinal (Middle): The Blue Carbon: Ocean and Climate Art Camp In the heart of Malalison Island, Javie envisions a transformative experience for local youth. Through The Blue Carbon: Ocean and Climate Art Camp, he seeks to instill knowledge and passion for ocean conservation and climate change mitigation. With a blend of artistic expression, experiential learning, and community involvement, Javie aims to empower 20 young individuals to become advocates for blue carbon ecosystems. Following the camp, an art exhibit will showcase the fruits of their labor, amplifying their voices and spreading awareness in their communities. What binds these remarkable individuals is their shared commitment to catalyzing change through creative means. Their projects not only address pressing environmental issues but also foster genuine community engagement. Despite their diverse backgrounds and approaches, they are united by a common purpose: to leave a positive impact on our planet and inspire others to join the cause. There’s no better way to touch a child’s heart than by telling them a story. Stories can help children understand complex concepts in a simple and engaging manner, laying the foundation for their emotional and intellectual development. Story books introduce children to various emotions and situations, encouraging them to empathise as they begin relating to different characters' lives. Books that address social issues, such as environmental conservation, help children become aware of the world around them. This awareness can inspire them to be socially responsible and take action to make a positive impact. Build Bridges: Whether that means addressing the spatial mismatch of jobs and talent or closing the gap between resources and innovation, the key opportunity is to be a connector. ?? There is power in convening: The simple act of gathering to discuss the issues in front of us with all stakeholders ensures that we are broad in our thinking and multiplying our impact. We are truly better together. ?? Hope Wins: In the midst of the biggest issue of our lifetime, the innovative approaches from within our own communities to address climate issues are truly inspirational and deserve to be at the forefront.

Kismet Some people use the word transition when making professional shifts; however, I am embracing the word expansion. I am expanding and embracing what feels right in this moment in time. The last few months have been a whirlwind with all converging last week and interestingly enough landing on my youngest daughter’s birthday. A coincidence, not so much…but I see it as a symbolic, parallel moment representing the normalcy of change that occurs during life. Being back in the Caribbean has led me into a space that aligns with my research and work with vulnerable populations, civic engagement, community organizing, and nonprofit organizations. I am excited to expand into environmental stewardship and support the advancement of environmental and energy justice in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I had my first foray into what it is to come this spring when I testified at a Senate hearing focused on Homeland Security, Justice and Public Safety (see the attached picture). Interceding the Dakota Access Pipeline on behalf of the human and earthen communities that would have been detrimentally impacted by it. Founding Sacred Stone Camp in opposition of the pipeline’s construction, ?? LaDonna Brave Bull Allard protected her people, Indigenous rights, and water with HEROIC ferocity and relentless ACTION against powerful, persistent adversity. ?? As an illustrious storyteller, she wove words to effect immense change: “We are fighting for our rights as the Indigenous peoples of this land; we are fighting for our liberation, and the liberation of Unci Maka, Mother Earth. Mt. Elbert in Sept 2023. Some ask why we summit Mt. Elbert when it takes 3 days and 50+ volunteers to serve 1 individual. It often comes into question if it is worth it when we could serve so many more in that timeframe with that team. Mt. Elbert is more than a single experience. It is symbolic of everything we are building together. It is emblematic of the glass ceiling we will continue to shatter as a community. We are the change, and if we can do this on Mt. Elbert year and year, and it becomes normal instead of "impossible", then every trail in every community can become adaptable through community strength. We can create something more inclusive and equitable in the mountains. For the record, we did create 110 other "impossible" trail experiences in 2023 :)

There was a period in my life where my utmost dream was working for children, promoting their well-being creating impact where safe spaces could be generated for the young to grow and flourish becoming global souls with a deep-loving concern for human kind. They say we need to give our children roots and wings. The roots of decency, compassion and kindness and the wings of curiosity, creativity and inclusion. In times of crisis, we all need coping mechanisms that can help us deal with hardships, hardships that are in large part these days beyond our control. No matter how far we are pushed, there are limits that should not be crossed, protecting the most vulnerable, eliminating unnecessary suffering, preserving human dignity and letting kindness prevail are I truly believe the pillars for sustainable societies.
