Explore Editor's choice article published in #SustainabilityMDPI entitled "The Optimisation of Storage Conditions for Pomegranate Juice during Its Maritime Transport" by authors Prof. Dr. Aneta Ocieczek, Dr. Tomasz Pukszta, Dr. Adam Kaizer and Dr. Renata Korzeniowska-Ginter from Gdynia Maritime University (https://lnkd.in/dYqMVwPH). It is estimated that the transport of plant-based food may be responsible for 50% of total CO2?emissions. The situation becomes highly unfavourable when the transported cargo deteriorates. Therefore, the optimisation of storage conditions during transport is a part of the concept of reducing food loss and waste. Moreover, it is an essential element of sustainable development. This study aimed to compare the stability of selected quality parameters of pomegranate juice under simulated conditions imitating maritime transport. #mdpi #openaccess #publishing #food #tansport

One of the more pressing aspects of being a scientist is that while you can look for an eternity in scientific literature and not find something it doesn't mean it isn't there. Then, later on a serendipitous moment precipitates exactly what you were looking for. In my case it is a publication from New Zealand on the use of chemicals thinners to reduce fruit set. We have just completed a successful three year manual thinning trial to investigate how to induce more consistent yields from year to year in Avocados. At the time we had no idea somebody had previously used chemicals thinners (and not for a lack of looking!). It remains to be seen if we can combine our trial results (yet to be published) and these ethephon thinning results to create a satisfactory thinning protocol for inducing consistent avocado yields from year to year. We’re pleased to share that our Environmental Scientist Langping Wu has published a paper in the Journal of Hazardous Materials. Titled ‘Tracking the transformation of persistent organic pollutants in food webs using multi element isotope and enantiomer fractionation’, its results were gathered after a series of field experiments at two sites using stable isotope and enantiomer fractionation concepts. Highlights from the paper: ? Isotope and enantiomer fractionation are applied to characterize the fate of POPs. ? Transformation of α-HCH was identified in plants, trees, and livers of wild animals. ? Enantiomer specific uptake of α-HCH was showed in brain and liver. ? Different transformation mechanism was revealed in different levels of food webs. ? The initial expose of HCH in wild animals are higher than the measured concentration. How can food industry by-products enhance soap quality? Researchers at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin have evaluated the physical parameters and spectral characteristics of soaps containing food industry by-products. This study explores how integrating these by-products can improve soap quality, providing an eco-friendly solution to waste management. By using their Texture Analyser, the team assessed critical properties such as hardness, cutting force, and frictional properties. The findings suggest that these bio-based soaps not only maintain high-quality standards but also promote sustainability by utilising food waste effectively. Update on the Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR) An article by the IBMA (International Biological Products Manufacturers Association) from February 2024. These are turbulent times in Brussels and throughout Europe. Farmers are protesting and politicians are reacting. In a moment of shock, Ursula von der Leyen proposed withdrawing the Regulation on the Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products (SUR). IBMA expects the College of Commissioners to accept this and is now calling on the Commission to work on a new proposal. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eecisxGx

???? Let’s pave the way for new food & agri technologies in Europe! ???? This is our message in Altinget.dk today alongside with Dansk Plantev?rn. Biosolutions such as biological plant protection products, biostimulants and fermented food and ingredients can help to secure a resilient future of European Food Systems. The question is how to get the technologies faster to market, as the current European approval process is longer than in the rest of the world? That is why we a few weeks ago invited 4 engaged EP-candidates -?Marianne Lyngh?j?(V),?Rikke Lauritsen(SF),?Helle Laursen Petersen?(K) &?Anne Sophie Callesen?(RV) - to discuss ?the role of new technologies within the food production in EU. ??And the discussion continues.
