At TNC in Florida, we envision a future where people and nature can thrive. That's what decarbonization - reducing carbon emissions - can achieve for everyone. This month, we launched the groundbreaking report, "Economic Benefits of Decarbonization in Florida," a multi-year effort with experts at AECOM and Cambridge Econometrics. Here's some results that the report predicts if Florida invests in Net Zero Power Systems and a Net Zero Economy: - Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) continually declines for solar and overall, reduces consumer electric prices. - Construction jobs grow in every Florida county with Net Zero Power Systems and a Net Zero Economy - Job growth will include occupations that have lower educational requirements and pay higher wages. Decarbonization is not only good for our planet, but good for people and profits. Today is our 'now moment' to slow and stop climate change in Florida. Want to learn more? Ask me about our March 27 webinar and press conference and I'll share the links via DM.

Last week at the CMC lunch with the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati mayors, a big topic was housing. Surprise, surprise. While the need for more federal resources was mentioned more than once, no one brought up the green dollars that have been deployed by the EPA and how we can leverage those for housing. Billions, yes, billions with a B, from the EPA. Ironically, I had met with someone about PACE financing earlier that morning before the lunch and see more opportunities there. Anyway, let’s go back to the EPA and its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and the Inflation Reduction Act, before I lose focus and talk about PACE. The funding is new, folks are trying to figure it out. But how do we layer it in the capital stacks for multifamily developments to drive down the cost to developers and ultimately rent to tenants? How do we make sure that the neighborhoods that bear the biggest burden of climate disasters, ie those that have traditionally gone without investment in general, benefit from climate resiliency efforts? How do we build in methodologies so that housing no longer accounts for 20% of end use greenhouse gas emissions? How do we prepare developers and contractors to take advantage of these opportunities? And how do we do all of this equitably? I have work to do!!

As the saying goes, “—it’s about to get real.” However the EPA awards, we’ll work to ensure these decarbonization and resiliency resources are deployed into affordable housing through lenders working directly with and in the communities who stand to benefit most from these resources. A new chapter and new sets of challenges loom large that we’ll continue to approach with creativity and curiosity. It’s been inspiring to witness deep collaborations, frank dialogue, and mission-focus. Let’s get our wrenches out. Learn by doing. All folks have a right to healthy, affordable, and sustainable housing. https://lnkd.in/gjWAhPF2

Did you know Minnesota has a green bank? Well, it's full name is the Minnesota Climate Innovation Finance Authority or MNCIFA. It was launched in 2023 to accelerate the deployment of clean energy projects across the state, starting with an $11 million pool. By the end of 2024, it will access another $34 million after the strategic plan is established. Learn more - https://lnkd.in/gPGsynTA ?? MNCIFA will help fund climate projects throughout all of Minnesota through grants, loans, credit enhancements, and other funding mechanisms to turn proposed projects into reality. ?? The first MNCIFA funded project is the Heights mixed use redevelopment in Saint Paul. Funds will be used to construct and operate a district geothermal energy system, with a first-of-its-kind application of aquifer thermal energy storage in the U.S.?Congrats to our partners at the Minnesota Department of Commerce, City of Saint Paul, and Ever-Green Energy for this major milestone in this sustainable development. As election campaigning ramps up, the spotlight within the decarbonisation sector has been on heat pumps. Check out the latest stories from May that you might have missed. 1.?HVP Magazine reported the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme has recorded a surge in heat pump applications as it marked its second anniversary last month. Applications were 93% higher compared with April 2023. However, uptake is well below the government’s ambition of 600,000 installations a year by 2028. https://lnkd.in/e_GGsYvj 2.?A new survey from the Construction Industry Collective Voice (CICV) has uncovered a staggering 59% of homeowners lacked the necessary information to confidently transition from traditional heating systems, such as gas boilers, to heat pumps and other renewable heating options. https://lnkd.in/e26pypDQ 3.?The CHIC Ltd (Communities & Housing Investment Consortium) Conference put the spotlight on keeping social housing tenants engaged throughout the retrofit process. Lara Oyedele (past CIH president) and Kai Jackson (Black Country Housing Group) highlighted the importance of resident engagement, suggesting every housing association should have tenants onboard from the very beginning. 4.?Rubianka Winspear, senior associate at law firm Trowers & Hamlins, outlines what’s new in Wave 3 of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund in Inside Housing. One of the major changes is putting more emphasis on replacing the heating system with a low-carbon solution first rather than completing fabric-first upgrades. https://lnkd.in/edvRnkfg 5.?H&V News – The National Infrastructure Commission says further incentives and policy reforms are needed for the government to deliver on its own heat decarbonisation targets following its 2024 progress review into major government projects and priorities. https://lnkd.in/eueQv-Yu

A year ago I didn't know what a power forward was, despite my pretensions of Raptor fandom. Today, Power Forward Communities is one step closer to helping install $2B worth of electrification upgrades in homes and communities across America. I am not a mathy person, but that's a lot of heat pumps. And a testament to the awesome collaborative work of so many on the Rewiring America team and all our partners beyond — Enterprise Community Partners, LISC, Habitat for Humanity International, and United Way, and the hundreds of communities that have signed up to champion this work. What a neat thing to breathe life into this, our climate work. Electrifying Everything for Everyone is a broad mandate, because 'everyone' is a broad group. These funds will help the portion of everyone that could not electrify without them. Because everyone deserves clean electric machines, and the right to choose them. 'Don't despair, decarbonize!' is something I repeat to myself quite often, but somedays I feel more electric oomph than others. Today is one of those days.
Rewiring America is honored to share that Power Forward Communities, a new coalition of which we are a member, has been awarded a $2 billion, seven-year National Clean Investment Fund (NCIF) grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Through our partnership with some of the country’s most trusted housing, climate, and community investment groups, including Habitat for Humanity International, Enterprise Community Partners, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and United Way, we’re purpose-built to help transform the housing sector, save homeowners and renters money, invest in stronger communities, and meet national climate goals. #Pittsburgh is emerging as a leader in innovative solutions like electric vehicles and clean energy to combat the climate crisis. The group Elected Officials to Protect America says in 2022, electric vehicle registrations increased by about?82%?from the previous year. Rep. Emily Kinkead, D-Allegheny County, envisions Pittsburgh as a?future leader?in the green economy, bolstered by strong labor unions and academic institutions. "So whether it's solar for schools, or capping oil wells or any number of things that move us away from fossil fuels, transitioning over to electric vehicles. Transitioning away from fossil fuels is a huge way that we can make sure that we are protecting our citizens now," she explained. The state is using funds from sources like the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes a historic investment of $370 billion to fight climate change over the next decade. Pennsylvania's goal of reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 is the same target President Joe Biden set for the nation. Erika Staaf Strassburger, Pittsburgh City Council member, said the biggest benefit of the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure law - especially in western Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh - is that they've been major job creators. "You don't have to go too far outside of Pittsburgh, to the Mon Valley, to see 600 new jobs created in a battery manufacturing plant that will help the electrification of our vehicles and of our systems. And those are jobs that wouldn't have otherwise been created without these federal investments," she explained. Strassburger pointed out federal funding will allow Pittsburgh to invest $15 million in electric vehicles for its city fleet, and she added that the transition is expected to save energy, reduce gas consumption, and ultimately save taxpayer dollars in the long run. "If we can expand that, which is our intention to reduce the energy burden - for starting with 100 City of Pittsburgh residents by the end of this year, and then over the next six years, do so for 10,000 residents across the region - that means that the greatest benefit we're seeing is people paying less out of their paycheck toward energy" she continued. #Pennsylvania has seen a significant increase in #EV purchases. At the start of this year, more than 47,000 electric vehicles were registered in the state. Governor Whitmer Unveils Housing and Energy Efficiency Goals at Mackinac Policy Conference At the Mackinac Policy Conference, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a new goal to build or rehabilitate 115,000 homes in Michigan by September 2026, an increase from the previous target of 75,000 homes set in 2021. This initiative aims to address the state's critical affordable housing shortages and reduce home energy costs, reflecting ongoing efforts by policymakers to support lower-income workers. Our Executive Director, Erika Farley, was in attendance as Whitmer emphasized the importance of this ambitious yet necessary goal. The Whitmer administration is already working to allocate nearly $1.4 billion in state and federal funding for various affordable housing initiatives. This funding is expected to facilitate the construction of 10,000 new housing units, marking the largest housing investment in Michigan's history.
