Since joining Saint-Gobain Interior Solutions, I’ve been fortunate to continue my career-long (and lifelong) passion for inclusion, equity, diversity, and belonging. Recently, I’ve had the privilege of delivering workshops that foster inclusivity and connection across our teams, as part of the Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland Together As One initiative. Tonight, I attended a public lecture by Professor Pam Alldred at Nottingham Trent University on posthumanism — a fascinating theory that challenges traditional human-centered perspectives, viewing us as part of a broader network that includes technology, animals, and the environment. This perspective really struck me and got me thinking about how the working world might expand our DEIB approach. Posthumanism offers a unique opportunity to broaden sustainability further. How could our approach to inclusion evolve if we saw it as part of an interconnected system? For instance, could we find ways to reinforce our commitment to both social and environmental responsibility, or consider the impact of technology, like AI in hiring, through this expanded lens? I’m proud to be part of a company already so committed to sustainability and inclusion by building better for people and the planet, and I’m excited to continue considering the systems we create — technological, social, and environmental — as we explore these ideas further. Applying a posthuman lens to DEIB means not only focusing on the diverse voices within our teams but also thinking about how those systems can work together for a more inclusive and sustainable future. #DEIB #Sustainability #Posthumanism #Inclusion #FutureOfWork #Development

What implications could such a shift have on our urban policy?? Historic preservation has traditionally been practiced with strict rules for maintaining material integrity tied to a specific place and time, most often through a singular perspective. However, a sense of place involves a larger set of narratives and layered histories. As our built environment shifts to adapt to our climate crisis, address our housing crisis, and deconstruct the legacy of racist planning and marginalizing policy, how can the field of preservation evolve to do more than one thing for more than one purpose? How can preservation practiced in non-traditional forms provide the opportunity for our urban fabric to be flexible, adaptable, and reflect layers of history to support multiple communities over time??

This #BCorpMonth we thought we’d celebrate by recognising fellow B Corps within the built environment space. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be looking at some of the amazing developers, architects, planners, and surveyors we’ve come across in the past couple of years. We’re kicking off with urban research and strategy company We Made That. Founded in 2006 and a B Corp since 2021, We Made That work exclusively with the public sector and charities to create equitable places – from high street regeneration to healthy neighbourhoods. Made up of architects, landscape architects, urban designers and engagement specialists, they design spaces and buildings that bring life and value to the built environment. But We Made That’s impact goes beyond their output, they’ve also done work to expand representation within the architecture sector as a whole. In collaboration with architectural practices IF_DO and Gort Scott, they launched RE-SET-GO, a pioneering initiative to provide work experience, skills training, and mentorship for individuals from under-represented backgrounds.
