Over the years, you have contributed immensely by producing numerous marketing professionals. It is highly appreciated that you are now recruiting a psychologist to address the stress that B-School students face. However, I have some questions that compel me to write this post. On average, your institution enrolls 240 fresh post-graduate students each year with an annual fee of ?11,50,000. This amounts to ?27,60,00,000. Considering it is a two-year program, the fee from new and continuing students sums up to approximately ?55,20,00,000 in one academic year. I believe there’s no shortage of fund. Now, regarding your advertisement for a part-time student counsellor/psychologist, your requirements are: - Minimum 10 years of experience. - A doctoral degree would be preferable. - Must work 9-25 hours per week. And your remuneration is? ?40,000 to ?45,000 per month. A premier institution offering world-class management education promoting inequitable pay? How can you expect a seasoned professional with a doctoral degree and 10-15 years of experience to work 3-5 hours every day for such a low salary? Mass Communication education in recent years has come a long way from traditional teaching and preparing students for mainstream media and allied outlets. With technology easing out the process of content creation, graduates in this field are expected to work independently with technical tools, learn to make sense of data, have a good understanding of content business, and be able to market their content. Mass Communication graduates are now branching out to several industries looking for content creators to cater to the needs of their respective audiences. In general, I don't advise folks to pursue #PhD or #FPM at mid-career, if the program is fully funded, one shall give a serious thought... 1. If you are contemplative, read a lot and want to write. This may be a good option. 2. If you have some curiosity, that bugs you. For example: why isn't there a standard recruitment form or CV format - all across India? Such PhD process may help you to figure out the systematic way to fulfill your curiosity. However, word of caution! PhD or FPM is a long process. On paper 4 to 5 years, but good thesis or degree may take even longer. And often there is no tangible ROI on such a long degree program. If this still interests you, go ahead and try. Students face significant challenges during preparation, yet remain resilient. 7?? Many are satisfied with post-COVID seat allotments. 8?? Surprisingly, COVID-19 had a positive impact on their preparation journeys. 9?? No notable relation was found between gender and diet preferences. ?? A majority have a Plan B, ensuring career flexibility beyond government jobs. Hiring for Vizuara has taught me a lot of lessons. Top 3 of those lessons are: 1?? College tags are overrated: Hiring students from IITs with 9.5+ CGPA has been a hit and miss. Many of these students are usually chasing multiple things at one time. Companies are springboards to jump into more lucrative jobs or more lucrative universities. 2?? Proactiveness is underrated: 3 years back, I focused on analytical skills while hiring candidates. More than analytical skills, the most important trait I look for now is proactiveness. Proactiveness is displayed through actions. It's about taking ownership and finding solutions yourself, without anyone telling you what to do. The problem is that proactiveness is a skill which is hard to measure in interviews. 3?? The way most companies do interviews doesn't work: I have seen companies with 8 rounds of interviews. I have seen companies with 3 coding rounds, 3 in person rounds and a final HR round. This takes so much time and is incredibly frustrating to candidates. Instead, just have 2 rounds. Round 1: A cleverly designed screening round where candidates have to solve a tough problem which your company has faced before. Design this round thoughtfully. Round 2: In person round with founders. Then trust your instinct. Go with it.
