SURVIVORS' Executive Director Etleva Bejko recently sat on a panel discussing the implications of the current administration on immigrant and refugee health at the 2025 San Diego Refugee and Immigrant Health Summit at the University of California San Diego. Spreading information about the current chaotic attacks on our county's most vulnerable populations is essential to improving potential health systems and their subsequent outcomes.

Refuge-Ed has been highlighted in the European Commission's 'Research Results Informing Migration Policy in Europe' roundtable policy brief as one of the projects providing valuable insights to EU policy ?? In 2015, we witnessed the beginning of the largest child refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War. Refuge-ed recognized the pressing need for quality education and mental health support for children. ?? Spanning six countries, the project aimed to enhance the educational and psychosocial wellbeing and integration of migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker children. Watch the video to find out more about the key outcomes of the project, and click the link below to access the policy brief: ?? https://lnkd.in/ei5KbcbQ #education #refugee #eucommission

#climate #change is intensifying the global #refugee crisis, driving unprecedented displacement as communities are forced to flee from extreme weather, rising sea levels, and diminishing resources.
We are proud that our founder and CEO Najeeba Wazefadost has been named as one of 5 refugee climate activists who are making a difference, by Earthrise Studio and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. We will continue to advocate for displaced populations affected by climate change, follow us for updates on what we are doing and how you can contribute. #ClimateDisplacement #WorldEnviromentDay #Sustainability #Advocacy

According the UNHCR, there are 25.4 million people currently registered as refugees, and over half of them are under 18. As global conflicts, economic volatility, and climate change force many more to flee their homelands, these numbers will only increase. What can be done to ensure refugee youth have access to quality mental healthcare, education, and opportunities? How can we better support their integration into communities of resettlement and their re-integration when they return home? https://lnkd.in/ezuZJFfs

The gravity of the challenges faced by migrants and refugees, particularly concerning their mental health, cannot be overstated. Mauricio Avendano’s reflection on the discussions held at the 5th School on Refugee and Migrant Health organized by the WHO underscores the pressing need for a comprehensive, global approach to addressing the mental health impacts of forced displacement. As highlighted by the alarming statistics—one in eight people worldwide being a migrant or forcibly displaced—this issue touches the lives of millions, and the mental health consequences are profound. The trauma and stress resulting from migration, compounded by the precarious legal, social, and environmental conditions in which displaced individuals often find themselves, pose a challenge that demands urgent attention. The WHO’s focus on the intersection of migration and mental health serves as a critical reminder that displacement is not just a matter of physical survival but one of psychological resilience. The mental toll, often rooted in past trauma, migration stress, and a sense of uncertainty, requires a robust, multi-faceted approach. Addressing this issue means going beyond basic humanitarian aid to integrating mental health services into displacement policies, ensuring access to care, and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health in these communities. The work of Prof. Patrick Bodenmann and Mauricio Avendano is pivotal in bringing these concerns to the forefront. Their efforts help to shift the narrative from seeing mental health as an afterthought to recognizing it as an essential part of the refugee and migrant support framework. As we witness an increase in forced displacement globally, it becomes ever clearer that mental health must be a central focus in humanitarian responses. The collaboration between institutions like the University of Lausanne and the WHO is a vital step in catalyzing positive change. The interdisciplinary approach to this issue will be key in not only addressing the immediate mental health needs of displaced individuals but also in advocating for systemic changes that foster long-term recovery, dignity, and well-being. It is essential that we, as a global community, commit to more than just temporary solutions. We must create an environment where the mental health of refugees and migrants is supported, recognized, and prioritized, ensuring that their journey towards stability is not just a physical one but one that includes healing and resilience. #MentalHealthInMigration #RefugeeHealth #Migration #GlobalHealth #MentalHealthSupport #WHO #PAHO #TraumaInformedCare #HumanitarianAction #MigrantRights #Displacement
Along with my colleague at the University of Lausanne, Prof Prof. Patrick Bodenmann, we had the privilege of participating in the 5th School on Refugee and Migrant Health, organized by the World Health Organization (@WHO) in Bogotá. Discussion on this issue is essential because globally, migration and forced displacement are at an all-time high. According to WHO, one in eight people worldwide is a migrant or forcibly displaced. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that over 117 million individuals were displaced in 2023. These are multiple challenges on mental health for migrants and refugees, often linked to trauma, migration stress, and the precarious legal and social environments in which they find themselves. #migration #refugees #who #paho #mentalhealth
