I grow citrus trees in pots in my little city garden. At first during the day I anxiously moved the pots to catch the sunshine just right, rotating the pots so the trees could grow balanced. Then I realized--what am I doing? Trees know how to adapt to the angle & hours of sunlight. They have, in fact, spent hundreds of millions of years figuring it out. Except for annual pruning when I can see something isn't going to work out, just make sure they have water & nutrients. Now that I'm writing about software design again (working on the followup to Tidy First?), I keep coming back to the same theme--stop molding the software into the shape of your ego. Be the soil, the water, the fertilizer, & yes sometimes the pruning shears that helps the software grow into the shape it needs to be. Now to figure out how to say this in a way that doesn't sound too woo woo.
