Today we honor Dr. Daniel Hale Williams who was a true pioneer in medicine and a champion for health equity. He was one of the first physicians to successfully perform open heart surgery, a groundbreaking achievement. In 1891, he founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first Black-owned and non-segregated hospital in the United States, creating opportunities for Black healthcare professionals and patients alike. He also made history as the first Black member of the American College of Surgeons.
