Stapleton’s De-Gaming process insured that everyone would be relatively GAME-free transacting in class discussions. They all agreed to a learning contract at the outset of the course that they would read assigned cases and would be graded on the quantity and quality of ideas sold in the class market. Anyone caught obviously unprepared by the spinning De-GAMER would lose a whole letter grade from the course grade. No one could feel or think that s/he was being persecuted or rescued if selected to start the class discussion of the day by the Classroom De-GAMER. The psychological GAME Drama Triangle roles of Persecutor, Rescuer, and Victim were largely banished from the course learning process. The actual grades received—A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s, and F’s—were relative grades, not absolute grades, Excellent, Good, Average, Poor, and Failing relative to the class. There were no numbers ostensibly proving what percentage of the course knowledge was retained in memory for so-called objective exams.

In my current contracts I've been exploring ways to create engaging learning experiences. I've been curious about teaching concepts via immersive 3D interactives in the browser. Over the past few days, as a side project, I made this visualization of a NOT gate. I got a bit carried away with my idea for the theme haha, I was having too much fun. On this Sunday evening, I find myself reflecting on conversations with children from family, friends and workplace – these Tech Pioneers. My conversation with them made me rethink how students can approach technology. For instance, when a child is passionate about playing online games, why not inspire them to create their own? They can dive into game design, learning how to work with frames, animations, and character development, turning their playtime into innovation. Similarly, many kids idolise YouTubers. Why not encourage them to become creators themselves? They can explore the art of video production, from mastering camera techniques to scripting, structuring, and building compelling storylines. In education, AI tools offer incredible opportunities beyond just avoiding and taking about plagiarism. By challenging students with complex questions and encouraging them to use these tools to analyse and expand their creative potential, we can help them realise their true potential. The goal is to shift their role from passive consumers to active creators and innovators. Technology, when used with purpose, unlocks endless potential for growth, creativity, and critical thinking. I’m delighted to introduce our project,?GoStream, a Flask-based platform designed for filming, streaming, detecting, and digitizing live Go Games, both for training and competitive purposes. ??What is GoStream all about?? In collaboration with Houda Ghallab, I focused on two critical aspects:?Go board detection?and?game management. Our initial step of board detection involves recognizing a Go board within a single frame and accurately assigning stones to their respective positions. To achieve this, we’ve trained a custom YoloV8 model. This model detects the board, corners, stones, and key intersections. Following the detection phase, we perform a post-processing phase to construct the complete grid by interpolating missing data and eliminating extraneous information. For a comprehensive guide on the detection process, check out our notebook: ??https://lnkd.in/e6wNCXiJ In addition to deep learning, we’ve developed an algorithmic method that relies on image processing, pattern recognition and feature extraction techniques. This approach includes edge and form detection. Curious about the technical details? The platform provides two distinct?modes: - Game Mode: This mode strictly follows the rules of Go, taking into account turns of black and white, captures, and illegal moves. It also offers the feature to download an SGF file of the game in progress. - Free Mode: In this mode, the exact positions of the stones on the board are replicated without the enforcement of any rules or turn orders, offering the flexibility to modify existing stone placements. Gamification can be misunderstood. Some think it's about making it more "fun", I disagree. Gamification is about focusing on the end goal and not fearing failure. In games, failure isn't the end. Developers want you to keep playing, so instead of: "Game Over" they say: "Continue?" encouraging you to try again. Education, too, is about learning from mistakes - ours or those documented by others. It's a process of continuous improvement. I've admired this video and the concepts taught for a long time, especially now that I realize it's presented by Mark Rober, an educational icon. His video beautifully illustrates the importance of focusing on the end goal (Princess Peach) and not being discourages by failures (the Pits). If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Let's focus more on the learning journey and less on the setbacks.
