Germany's goal of achieving 70 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045 requires innovative approaches beyond conventional methods. In our feedback on the German Federal Network Agency's draft Grid Development Plan, SuperNode advocates for superconducting cable technology, a cutting-edge solution that effectively balances infrastructure expansion with environmental protection. John Fitzgerald, CEO of SuperNode, said: “The next generation of superconducting land and submarine cables will be ready for the market before the end of this decade. This is within the timeframe quoted for conventional submarine cables.” To achieve our ambitious renewable energy targets, it's crucial to support the development and implementation of these technologies. SuperNode's full response can be read here: https://lnkd.in/eAHSvN_4 #Innovation #RenewableEnergy #GridModernisation #Energy #GridDevelopment #Superconductors

See our latest blog for a breakdown of three trends affecting the power generation community – and why the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should be attuned to the operational realities of the electric grid, not just aspirational goals. Aggressive mandates will bring about the premature retirement of dispatchable natural gas-fired power plants – power plants the grid needs now more than ever for a reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy expansion. Construction of offshore windfarms emits a lot of CO2. Actually, we could rebuild all the office space in London 5 times for the same amount of CO2 required to build the foundations for the UK offshore windfarms planned before 2030! What is more interesting is, that the foundations alone stand for 50% of the total emissions from a wind farm project. This article shows that there is a huge potential in choosing the right foundation for the wind farm project. In line with our own findings, the results are remarkable and show that concrete gravity based foundations are the way forward. They only emit half or even one third of the CO2 compared with monopiles or jacket solutions. That is a significant difference. Half or less. That is another good reason for me to keep developing this type of foundation. ??
To decarbonise our energy system, we need to 'spend' carbon when building offshore wind farms! Working with sustainability is full of big and small dilemmas like this one. However, a new rating system for measuring carbon for offshore wind projects can help bring data to the table for decision-making and help set the frame for carbon management on these significant and highly needed projects. We need high-quality data across project portfolios to make informed decisions on developments at a societal level, and this work by COWI is a big step in the right direction to enable this. The system was developed by Cameron Archer-Jones, Eduardo Calderón Asensio, Romina Shkurtaj, and Chenyu Zhang, and the paper is now published in The Institution of Structural Engineers You can access the paper for free here: https://lnkd.in/dr3jaBhX #wearecowi #netzero #offshorewind

?? Another chapter on renewable related policy "Private Wires – Guiding Principles for Policy Formulation" Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) has published Guiding Principles for Policy Formulation for Private Wires on 4th July.?It outlines the objectives of the guiding principles along with eight policy considerations. Galetech welcomes these guiding principles, in particular the policy considerations that the objective of any change is to accelerate #decarbonisation and promote the deployment of renewable energy and storage along with complementing security of supply, offshore wind strategy and the hydrogen strategy.?Our view is that private wires will be needed for Ireland to realise its huge #OffshoreWind potential to generate green hydrogen and e-fuels for decarbonisation of Ireland’s economy and export to other markets. We in Galetech are looking forward to the formulation of the policy around these guiding principles. ?? ??Learn more here: ??https://lnkd.in/ey55bXHi #GreenHydrogen #RenewableEnergy #DECC

#TheCommonwealth once again exemplified leadership by passing a clean energy bill that will deliver comprehensive #climate solutions across the state. The bill will help #Massachusetts achieve its emissions reduction goals, as well as help stimulate economic #opportunities for the state’s energy future. ? As a developer and provider of innovative energy solutions, JERA Americas is especially encouraged to see the omnibus #energybill instruct the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) to study Surplus Interconnection Service (SIS), which leverages underutilized interconnection capacity at legacy power plants to bring clean energy into the regional power grid faster and more affordably. We believe that, at our asset in Sandwich, Mass., SIS will save hundreds of millions of dollars for developers and residents down the line, at a time when the costs of offshore wind development continue to rise. ? We applaud the inclusion of an SIS study in the bill and look forward to working with the DOER, the Office of Energy Transformation, and the Healey Administration as we develop solutions that deliver affordable, reliable, and #cleanenergy for the state. ? #energy #innovation #legislation #business #JAM #JERAAmericas

District Heat Networks - Programme for Government identifies a key priority for the new government here in Ireland - to enact the Heat Bill in 2025. “This Government will enact legislation in 2025 to accelerate the roll out of district heating systems “ See page 52 - Future proofing Ireland’s Built Environment - at link; https://lnkd.in/dD2FG-ZB Practical and pragmatic climate action is an opportunity for us all on the island of Ireland, I and others in the energy sector, have identified the development of District Heat Networks(DHN) as one such integrated energy sector opportunity. Suggest we must stop thinking in silo’s and look at energy and climate action holistically across all sectors. Energy Sector integration and collaboration is key to successful climate action. I would welcome the opportunity, if elected to ?Seanad éireann next week, to advocate for, and work collaboratively with, colleagues in the Oireachtas,?to promote and deliver this integrated approach, to capture the opportunities and to address the challenges. see link https://lnkd.in/e--KvPuU The Heat Bill heads have already been published by Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications on 8th Nov 2024 as the General Scheme of the Heat (Networks and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024 See link https://lnkd.in/ebH7-3-5 #eng4climate Energy Environment & Climate Action Division of Engineers Ireland Irish Academy of Engineering Euroheat & Power Irish District Energy Association Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)
