We can all learn some lessons from the HPC and Supercomputing world when it comes to optimising energy efficiency and sustainability in the adoption of AI. For decades, HPC architecture has enabled consistently high levels of utilisation to be matched with maximum resource and energy efficiency. The UK's latest supercomputer, Isambard AI at the University of Bristol, is an HPE Cray EX2500 with NVIDIA Grace-Hopper GH200 combined CPU-GPU superchips, HPE Cray Slingshot 11 interconnect, direct liquid cooling and housed in HPE modular data centres in the University grounds, freeing up building space for learning while right-sizing power and cooling for maximum efficiency. The modular data centres enable waste heat to be recovered and reused for district heating projects and other community benefit - ensuring that each unit of power consumed not only powers the computer itself but also provides an additional 2-3 units of heat energy that can reduce reliance on fossil fuels for space heating. https://lnkd.in/enJeagcf Phase 1 of Isambard has been commissioned with 168 GH200s providing 647 Petaflops of AI performance and shot straight away to the #2 position on the Green500 list of the world's most efficient computers. https://lnkd.in/eJ-hWVvm When fully commissioned, Isambard will have 5,448 GH200 chips and will be 30X more powerful than Phase 1, and the UK's biggest supercomputer. Supercomputers are powering the UK's research and innovation, in critical areas such as AI safety, accelerating automated drug discovery, robotics and climate research.
