There's a way in which the best way to judge someone's actions is not just what they do, but how they do it. Last night in her closing address, Vice President Kamala Harris said she'd enter the White House with a to-do list. With just 7 days until the election, it's mind-boggling to reflect on how much she and her team have already done in just THREE MONTHS of campaigning. Things like: ?? kicking her campaign off with an iconic first ad ?? delivering a memorable DNC with a wealth of powerful oratory moments (including her own nomination speech) ?? securing a decisive debate win ?? raising >$1B (including $1.5M raised in 3 hours by 44,000 black women on a Winning with Black Women call in July) ?? mounting a broad-based, well-organized GOTV campaign ?? pitching a big and diverse tent of supporters ?? delivering a cogent closing argument in an evocative location Despite starting behind the line, VP Harris has delivered a very competitive campaign---by definition. If not, the polls would be telling a very different story. Her actions are speaking in ways that deserve acknowledgement. And while this is a serious, and highly consequential moment, a little levity (the kind-hearted kind) to illustrate the point can't hurt. Really interesting to see the way people, organisations and institutions invoke anti-racism and black intellect when they want to maintain incompetence. They are way less interested in black intellect and anti-racism when it doesn’t serve their purposes. Way less interested when black students are being failed daily on our campuses because of racism. Even more interesting are the black colleagues who allow themselves to be used with the view that they are being represented. They don’t care on any other day. Why would they care today? Where ARE they when black women are being silenced in the workplace, making complaints, and getting terminated? Where are they when black staff are getting ignored every possible way for academic promotion? Where are they when black staff report bullying and racialised discrimination in the workplace and said black staff had to leave? Being anti-racist isn’t always inclusive… “You really wanna know?) Do you want peace? (How I get so low?) Then watch us in the street (Only one way to go) One protest for you (Higher) Three-sixty-five for me” - Kendrick L #givemeabreak

Don't Drop DEI - Last week I participated in an invigorating call sponsored by NationSwell and Greg Behrman. Stacey Abrams was the featured guest, who noticed one day that with all of the attacks on DEI, there was not a clear entity/organization defending it. Her call to us was "Don't drop DEI. When they make you doubt your name, they make you doubt your value." Her plan is to move advocates to activists, move agnostics to advocates and move antagonists to agnostics." Her call to action was: 1. Speak up. We need more voices that DEI is the right thing to do. If we don't speak up, our silence becomes the story. 2. Stand firm. They have come after NASCAR's diversity work, so believe if they have not found you yet, they are coming. 3. Stay in touch. She is available to advocates and activists who are willing to help and she has resources/tools to help. I need to move from an advocate to an activist. Use your voice to defend DEI.

Many ponder the significance of Black inclusion in the UK - well, todays headlines answers the question. Where the colour of power remains a pressing issue, as those who wield influence get away with overt racism and hate. The pervasive challenges of gender and colourism intertwined disproportionately affecting black women and black communities more broadly in the UK. These dynamics manifest prominently in the workplace, evident in the persistent concrete ceilings and hateful verbal firing squad faced by many. A glance at the BAME spectrum reveals stark discrepancies in workforce metrics, particularly concerning outcomes for black individuals. As we approach Black Inclusion Week in May, themed "Empowered for Change: Building a Better Future Together," aimed at prompting introspection on both organizational and personal levels. Today's headline discourse highlights the need for bravery and accountability, as some chose silence in the face of reprehensible remarks directed at Diane Abbott, the first black female MP by Frank Hester. To those actively engaged in supporting, celebrating, and amplifying the voices of black individuals, We Salute you - Your dedication is commendable and crucial in fostering black equity and inclusion.
