Climbing is inherently risky. Anyone who aims for the summit has to understand that no matter what they bring with them or how much they prepare, there is always a chance you won't come home. So why do it? Why risk it? What's the point? True personal growth comes from leaving your comfort zone and exposing yourself to a degree of risk. "A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for..." You can never entirely mitigate the risk involved in peak bagging. But paradoxically speaking, you would never want to if you could. Without some semblance of risk, climbing would only be a shell of the experience it actually is. You don't find your soul outdoors unless there's a real chance you may lose it out there. That journey led me to start We Are Explorers - proof that passion can turn into purpose and a livelihood. We recently interviewed Al to revisit his wisdom , and his message hit home again: you don’t need to fly across the globe for adventure. In fact, some of the most exciting journeys are right on your doorstep. Al traded epic expeditions for microadventures - bite-sized, local explorations like camping after work or plunging into a nearby river. His takeaway? It’s not about where you go but how you show up: with curiosity, gratitude, and attention. So, here’s my challenge: this month, instead of scrolling your social apps for far-off inspiration, grab a map from the nearest book store or petrol station and explore a local trail; find somewhere unfamiliar within the familiar. Heck, why not try sleeping outside. Adventure is way closer than you think it is, with the power to unlock new ways to engage with and protect our natural world.

This picture was taken on the Isle of Skye and was one of the first walks we did. Sometimes we think we can't do something so we don't even try. On this hike, I almost didn't climb to the top with everyone else because I didn't think I could. And then I did (that's me in the light blue jacket on the far left). I'm so glad I was able to calm that inner part of me that didn't think I could.
