June is Recreation and Parks Month (JRPM)! Access to parks and recreation fosters personal and environmental health, social inclusion, and strong communities. This JRPM, we encourage you to support outdoor recreation by learning more about invasive species. Invasive species can impact the ability to enjoy outdoor space by forcing closures (such as Emerald Lake, B.C., due to whirling disease), encroaching on trails, compromising native species and biodiversity that support the health and beauty of natural spaces, and incurring management costs. For example, picture a lake that has been rapidly clogged up by European water chestnut, preventing the boating and swimming enjoyed in previous years. Things you can do to help protect your local parks and spaces? ??Play Clean Go by brushing off your pets, boots, and gear before and after entering a natural area. ??Buy firewood locally. ??Clean Drain Dry your watercraft. ??And more! Happy National Park Week (April 20-28, 2024)! National Park Week is an annual week for celebration & recognition of the US National Parks. The National Park Service was founded in 1916, while the 1st official national park – Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 via a law signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. Since then, the U.S. has amassed 63 national parks, from Alaska to the Florida Keys. To visit all of them, you’ll need to travel to 31 states and two U.S. territories: American Samoa & the U.S. Virgin Islands. There are also 429 national park sites in the U.S. that fall into several categories such as National Battlefields, National Historic Sites, National Monuments, National Seashores, & National Recreation Areas. Vising all US National Parks is on the top of my Bucket List and my current count is 40. National parks are special places that create lasting memories for everyone. Whether it’s the breathtaking views, historical significance, or personal connections, these natural wonders leave an incredible mark on our hearts. My journey to national parks always provides me true enjoyment, solace, inspiration, powerful experiences & life-changing moments while surrounded by nature. “If you truly love nature, you’ll find beauty everywhere”. #USNationalParks #YourParkStory #MyParkStory

MONTANA & OREGON - Several states across the country are currently in the process of developing their Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans (SCORPs) including Montana and Oregon. The SCORP process was established in the 1960s as a tool to guide the development and management of outdoor recreation resources by state to receive funding under the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Act. States update their SCORP every five years. This allows states, tribes, and local governments, to apply for and receive LWCF matching grant funding for the acquisition and development of public parks and other outdoor recreation sites. Over the years, some SCORPs have evolved to include a greater focus on public participation, stewardship, and equitable access to outdoor recreation opportunities.?By addressing issues such as access, conservation, equity, and economic impact, SCORPs play a crucial role in promoting sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
