The world final between the Boston Celtics and Panathinaikos BC would be an unprecedented clash of basketball titans from different continents, each representing rich histories and passionate fanbases. The Boston Celtics, a powerhouse of the NBA, bring decades of championship pedigree, the Celtics symbolize excellence in American basketball. On the other side, Panathinaikos BC, one of Europe's most successful basketball clubs, hails from Athens, Greece. With a fervent following known for creating a formidable atmosphere in their home arena, the Greens have dominated the EuroLeague scene with multiple championships. Their roster typically includes top European talent alongside international stars, showcasing a blend of skill, strategy, and passion. A world final between these two teams would not only be a clash of different basketball style, fast-paced, dynamic NBA versus tactical, disciplined EuroLeague, but also a cultural exchange, showcasing how basketball has evolved differently on opposite sides of the globe. It would capture the imagination of fans worldwide, drawing attention to the global appeal and competitive nature of the sport. In such a matchup, the stakes would be high, with both teams eager to prove themselves on the international stage. It would be a game where every dribble, pass, and shot could determine the outcome, leaving a lasting impact on the annals of basketball history and the hearts of fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

Alfredo Sena, the top international baseball prospect for the 2027 draft class, has verbally agreed to join the Atlanta Braves, with a projected signing bonus of around $5.8 million. At just 15 years old, Sena exemplifies the global future of baseball. In the U.S., 15-year-olds compete for spots on elite travel teams, aiming for college scholarships and MLB drafts. Internationally, players are signing professional contracts as early as 16. I foresee Major League Baseball expanding globally in the next 5–8 years, with teams based in cities like London or regions in Latin America. This would transform the World Series into a truly global event and pave the way for an international baseball draft. Currently, over 70% of MLB draft picks come from college, yet only 4% of MLB players are African American. To enhance opportunities for African American athletes, we must prioritize both development and advocacy. Development without advocacy is like a Ferrari Testarossa without an engine—impressive in appearance but lacking the power to move forward. Let’s engage: How can we better prepare our players for the evolving future of baseball? https://lnkd.in/eWfTVkSy

Having star power is great. Full arenas and lots of people talking about your product? That's even better. It's also a recipe for complacency. With so many things working for Euroleague Basketball right now, there's one big concern that needs addressing. Where are the young stars? Who will be the player that arouses the interest of the next generation of fans? I address why a 'tomorrow problem' should be tackled today in my latest column. Baseball isn’t the first sport that comes to mind when you think of Denmark, but a dedicated group of players and volunteers is changing that. Under the leadership of Jay Cannon, a former professional baseball player from the United States, the Danish national baseball team has recently taken home the Nordic Cup, marking a turning point in the development of the sport in this country. Since Cannon took over as head coach, baseball in Denmark has been transformed. “We wanted to create a national programme, give these kids an opportunity to represent their country in international tournaments,” he explained. That dream became a reality when the team, composed of players from the Lyngby Jokers and Odense Wolves, went on to dominate the Nordic Cup. Despite being seen as underdogs, the Danish team outperformed nations with longer baseball traditions. Cannon emphasises that the team’s success is due to more than just what happens on the field. “None of this would be possible without the parents,” he said, highlighting their volunteer work. From driving the players to practices to securing indoor facilities and managing media outreach, the parents have been instrumental to the team’s achievements. “Everyone has a job to do, and we’re only successful if everybody does their job,” Cannon said. The national team consists of hand-picked players. There are five main baseball clubs across Denmark—Lyngby, Copenhagen, Aarhus, Herning, and Odense. The most serious players, those who train multiple times a week and even travel outside Denmark to compete, come from Lyngby Jokers and Odense Wolves. Cannon sees long-term potential in the younger generation, which is why even players under 15 were invited to travel with the team to the Nordic Cup. “Our kids are incredibly talented, more disciplined, and focused,” Cannon said. “I tell the parents all the time, I love these kids as if they were my own. I’m the luckiest guy in the world to be among them.” As baseball in Denmark continues to grow, Cannon hopes more young players will join. The Lyngby Jokers and Odense Wolves serve as the backbone of the national programme, but Cannon is quick to point out the importance of developing talent from the very beginning. “If we don’t focus on club-level baseball and the development of kids under 12 and 15, this thing won’t sustain itself,” he said. There is a national baseball program in Denmark. While I’m positive more people know that this week than last week, that fact is still very much unknown. We function as any other national program functions. Our players train, they share a common goal, and they represent their country at the standard we demand of them. Unfortunately, they aren’t “elite” enough. Herein lies the problem. The funding and finances needed to carry out a national program lie directly with those who say we aren’t “elite” enough. We have built this program from nothing. No money, no facilities, no help. It has come from dedicated players and parents who believe in this dream enough to open their pockets and fund it themselves. Our travel, paid for by parents. Our uniforms and practice gear, paid for by parents. These kids take pride in wearing Denmark across their chest just as much as anyone else lucky enough to do so, they just aren’t “elite” enough. This method of funding is not sustainable. We want to go to the European Championships, we want to go to the U.S., and we want to go to the Olympics. We want an actual baseball field, we want an indoor facility, and we want the equipment we need. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the world. It’s not in Denmark, I understand that. But that’s precisely what we are trying to change. The lack of interest across the country is directly impacting those that do take this seriously. These kids want a future in this game. They want to play in college in the U.S., they want to play in the MLB. They have ambitions, but because they are a small group they aren’t considered “elite” enough. The mindset of a culture cannot be changed from parent’s pockets, that’s just not a reality. That’s why we need help. There is a small group of people working extremely hard to fundraise. They are reaching out to anyone and everyone you can think of. The response has been, “that sounds like a nice project, we wish you the best of luck, but unfortunately we aren’t interested.” We just need someone to take a chance. The mindset is there. The passion is there. The desire is there. WE just need some help. We are looking for partners, someone looking to go on this journey with us. We could start a GoFundMe, but the reality is we need more than just a few kind hearted donations. We need partners that see what we’re trying to accomplish and are passionate enough to go with us. Someone looking to change the way a country thinks about the greatest team game in the world. If you would like to share this, please do. I got a job because people I didn’t know took the time to share a post I wrote. As I’ve said before, humility is a powerful thing. So, if you know someone that’s looking to give kids a real opportunity, please share! This is us humbly asking for a hand. We’re not trying to change the world, we’re just trying to change Denmark.
