A recent poll shows that 75% of citizens in the Netherlands, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Sweden support the Nature Restoration Law (NRL). They believe in urgent action to restore ecosystems for better health, farming, and economic benefits. Despite the clear public opinion, these EU Member States are not supporting the Nature Restoration Law. Succow Foundation supports the NRL and urges, alongside the #RestoreNature coalition, that opposing governments listen to their citizens and adopt the law. ???? Eleven ministers from Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Slovenia have sent a letter urging the opposing EU countries to support the NRL at the Environment Council meeting on June 17th. https://lnkd.in/epMTs3jv Let's work together to protect our nature and future! #NatureRestorationLaw #RestoreNature #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #VoteFutureEU #VoteForNature BirdLife International ClientEarth WWF Greifswald Moor Centrum ?Restore Nature Coalition

Today’s first “trialogue” between the European Commission Council of the European Union, and European Parliament on proposed changes to the European Union Deforestation Regulation #EUDR has ended in a tense standoff. The Commission and Council will only agree to a 12-month delay to the law’s implementation timetable – as proposed by the Commission on October 3 – while the political attack dogs from the Parliament are still angling to take a bite out of the substance of the law itself. The stalemate will last until the next trialogue, which will take place on, or before, December 3. So the wait continues to see if a law fundamental to protecting the world's forests will be delayed but left intact; or whether it will suffer a major blow, with critical impacts for people, wildlife and the climate. The very last attempt to save Europe's Nature Restoration Law (NRL). 11 EU member states (led by Ireland) have written an urgent letter to Hungary, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Austria and Poland to end the deadlock in the European Council. It is a timely call. The WWF just released a study which shows that EU Member States channel between €34 billion and €48 billion of European subsidies annually into activities that harm nature and biodiversity (https://lnkd.in/d2EvKuzv). The NRL would not reverse this, of course, but it would oblige Member States to restore at least 20% of land and sea habitat that is in poor condition by 2030 (90% by 2050). There already is a trilogue agreement and the European Parliament voted the NRL through in February. As with the CSDDD, the Council is the bottleneck. Many see this as a last attempt, as they doubt that Hungary (which takes over the EU Presidency in July) would revive the NRL. Fingers crossed for an important part of the EU Green Deal! #sustainability, #naturerestorationlaw, #biodiversity

This new study showing a pathway to improving Australia's natural environment is right on target. Australia massively underspends on the environment and every five years we get a state of environment report reflecting that neglect. Spending money on the environment works and it is affordable. It's just that the two major political parties are quick to slash spending on the environment. Solution: vote for the candidates with the best environmental policies.
Yes, Australia’s environment is on a depressing path – but $7 billion a year would transform it

'with its goal to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and seas, the?#NatureRestorationLaw?will be the first major legislative effort to implement the new?#KunmingMontreal?#GlobalBiodiversityFramework?agreed by >200 countries' a win for nature and people
??A landmark win & fresh hope #ForNature! Today’s vote by the European Parliament to get the new Nature Restoration Law over the finish line offers fresh hope for Europe’s ability to combat the worst effects of #climatechange to come. 5 immediate reflections: ?? #Nature4Climate - despite an ongoing disinformation campaign, this vote signals that the EU Parliament indeed recognises the vital role nature must play in protecting European citizens, landowners, farmers and businesses alike from growing climate risks such as droughts, floods and wildfires. ?? #Nature4Food - restoring nature will also help to combat the mounting biodiversity loss that threatens long-term #food and water security. ??#RePoweringNature - huge thanks to all the progressive industries out there who publicly advocated for this law, especially Europe’s power sector represented by Eurelectric who joined our calls for the original legislative proposal right from the start and allies such as WindEurope, SolarPower Europe, Ursula Woodburn and her teams at Corporate Leaders Groups, Eva Zabey and her teams at Business for Nature. The policy support from these corporate sectors has put them on the right side of history and shall not be forgotten. ??#RestoringRivers - at The Nature Conservancy we are especially celebrating inclusion of the target to restore 25,000 km rivers to free-flowing conditions - one of our own 2030 goals! ?? #GlobalLeadership - with its goal to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and seas, the #NatureRestorationLaw will be the first major legislative effort to implement the new #KunmingMontreal #GlobalBiodiversityFramework agreed by >200 countries - many across the world were watching today’s vote, which is also a major boost to global efforts to protect and restore nature! My personal congratulations & thanks to all our incredible colleagues and partners including Andras Krolopp Julia Boverhoff Rebecca Humphries Henrik Osterblad Tess Hartmann-Hergott Dragana Mileusni? Coming soon in all EU countries
“And nature was restored in Europe happily ever after”: this is the happy ending that we finally got after Monday’s vote on the Nature Restoration Law! The historic approval of the law and the perfect conclusion to a troublesome story would have never been possible without such overwhelming support: from NGOs to businesses, from scientists to activists, from decision-makers to citizens, millions of people mobilised to safeguard the future of Europe’s nature. Thanks to their voices, the European Parliament and Council decided to listen and support this law. We are very much aware of the current climate and biodiversity crises, but now the EU has an additional great tool to tackle them effectively. By bringing back our nature, Europe will be able to better face and mitigate the effects of the droughts, floods and other extreme events it is already experiencing. A special thank you goes to the whole #RestoreNature coalition and its supporters, who worked restlessly to make this success possible. ??

Europe's State of #Nature is deteriorating rapidly, with over 80 % of habitats in poor condition, posing risks to society and the global economy. The new EU Nature Restoration law aims to restore ecosystems, habitats, and species across the EU's land and sea. It includes legally binding targets for various ecosystems until 2030, such as forests, marine areas, urban spaces, and agriculture.? This law is crucial as it addresses the decline and promotes restoration, and will potentially impact the financial and industrial sectors in significant ways. To learn more about the law's relevance, background, and its implications for the private sector, read our latest #sustainability blog article which has been co-authored by Nhung K.: https://lnkd.in/eEDZFmpQ #NatureRestoration #SustainableFinance

?? Another hard-fought win for the Nature Restoration Law as the European Parliament voted in favour of the law's final agreement! "The Nature Restoration Law has always been so much more than a law to bring back nature. It is a symbol that Europe can, and will, commit to fighting for the survival of our planet," says our #RestoreNature coalition of WWF EU, BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, ClientEarth, and European Environmental Bureau. Members of the European Parliament listened to over 1 million citizens, scientists, businesses, activists and NGOs, and backed the negotiated agreement, despite last-minute attempts by far-right and conservative MEPs to torpedo it. "We are relieved that MEPs listened to facts and science, and did not give in to populism and fearmongering. Now, we urge Member States to follow suit and deliver this much-needed law to bring back nature in Europe," continues our #RestoreNature coalition. Read our full reaction: https://lnkd.in/eJ44CvaX

By making regulations and management plans readily available online, MPA websites could play a pivotal role in fostering greater transparency and public engagement in marine conservation initiatives. As highlighted by the Aarhus Convention, ensuring access to information, promoting public participation in decision-making, and facilitating access to justice are essential components of effective environmental governance. However, the assessment reveals that while most MPA websites serve as platforms for disseminating information, they fall short in serving as participatory instruments. ProtectedSeas Navigator works towards making marine regulations easier for everyone to access, and equipping the ocean community and decision makers with the data needed to act. https://lnkd.in/ekNqMxca #marineprotectedareas #europe #marineconservation #mpa
