When people from across Ottawa’s housing and homelessness world get together, we can build a system that works better for everyone. The Moving UPP project brought together nearly 200 local thought-leaders, frontline staff, and people with lived experience of homelessness. Working together, they identified ways that Ottawa’s housing and homelessness systems could use the resources we currently have to build a more effective system that helps get people into homes faster and more easily. Why doesn't criminalizing homelessness work? ?? IT'S INEFFECTIVE: arresting or fining a person does not solve their housing problem. It accomplishes nothing. ??? It KEEPS PEOPLE HOMELESS FOR LONGER: not only are there fines, but the record follows a person attempting to secure a job and housing. It becomes a long-term barrier to exiting homelessness. ?? IT DISTRACTS FROM SOLUTIONS: rather than punishing individuals without housing options, our communities should commit to the challenging yet sustainable work that has repeatedly proven effective in resolving homelessness. #HomelessnessIsSolvable Learn more about the Johnson v. 11/23 6:15 pm PST update: Issaquah still without power n r freezing cold on our mountain. 4+ days. Monday, 11/25 for power restoration is our current eta. Imagine Housing - who owns and oversees Rosecrest Apts. along with other low income housing properties throughout East King County, touts their commitment to keep their tenants housed, stable n safe, and for tenants to always reach out in emergency situations. Notta word from them during this devastating Bomb Cyclone that recently hit their multiple properties. Yet they are still somehow able to actively promote their 'community efforts and contributions' during this time. Um, to whom? Imagine Housing continues to neglect/ignore their properties/tenants who reach out in dire need. Past and present. Most importantly, COVID. And now THIS.

In 2024, 3,280 people were experiencing homelessness across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties. Since 2020, we've seen a 17% decrease in overall homelessness and a 33% drop in unsheltered homelessness. Thanks to Houston's Housing First model, homelessness has been reduced by an incredible 60% since 2011! But as COVID-19 relief funding comes to an end, we need $50 million annually to sustain this progress. Without continued funding, homelessness could rise by 60% again by 2026. ?? Houston's success has been built on strong collaboration with local leaders, public-private partnerships, and a commitment to permanent housing solutions. Let's keep pushing forward to ensure everyone has a safe place to call home. ?? For decades, the U.S. federal government has dominated the country’s response to homelessness via their policy response known as Housing First. It has been an unmitigated disaster. During the past decade, federal homelessness policies have failed to stem the growing desperation among America’s homeless, and by most metrics, it appears to have only added to their suffering. The federal government’s preoccupation with Housing First is unlikely to change quickly. In this new report from Devon Kurtz of the Cicero Institute, find out how Housing First has failed–and what states can do to foster state-level innovation in their approaches to homelessness. The link the the report is in the first comment.

In 2021, we committed to a transformation of our homelessness response system. We aligned investments to focus on reducing unsheltered homelessness. Together, the All Neighbors Coalition has reduced unsheltered homelessness by 24% since that system transformation began. Our next big milestone is a 50% reduction in unsheltered homelessness as compared to 2021 levels. If we stay the course with continued public and private investments in proven strategies for housing and support services, we can reach this goal by 2026. Together, we will make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring in Dallas and Collin counties! #endhomelessness #Housingforward #allneighborscoalition
