Germany has outlined seven new grid connection routes to support the expansion of wind power. The Federal Network Agency has identified preference areas for these future grid connections, which will be five to ten kilometers wide and will be used to plan new power lines. This is expected to expedite the planning process for these critical infrastructure projects. One route, OstWestLink, is still under development. This is a positive step forward for Germany's clean energy transition. By expanding its grid capacity, Germany can ensure that more wind power can be integrated into the national grid. Yes, of course we should build clean energy on brownfields sites. The trick is getting those sites to be located next to transmission lines and substations with appropriate interconnection capacity and in markets with demand.

It's Friday! It's been a short week, so here is the light version of 5 Minutes of Energy on a Friday! ?? The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is now consulting on a new guideline for Transmission and Infrastructure License (TIL) administration and an application content guide for TILs in an effort to help strengthen the licencing framework that facilitates the development of a reliable, secure offshore wind industry. These documents aim to assist prospective licence holders and other stakeholders to understand: - the licence requirements for TILs; and - the licensing processes set out in the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act 2021 and Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Regulations 2022 ? The Victorian Labor Government has announced that it is developping a new suite of tools and guidelines that will ensure native wildlife are not harmed by renewable energy projects. By July 2024, the Government will release new state-wide maps that identify key habitat areas for native wildlife which will help renewable energy developers and planners?to build renewable energy in areas that will have the least impact on wildlife. By October 2024, research will be completed?to better understand how wind turbines could impact threatened bird and bat species - this will determine the flight height of the Southern Bent-wing Bat, ways to reduce bird and bat collisions with turbines and detailed research on Brolga breeding sites. This research will inform the?Handbook for the development of renewable energy in Victoria?– new guidelines on the planning and construction of renewable projects in Victoria. The handbook will also include a template for bat and bird management plans. Consultation will occur in the second half of this year and input will be sought from Traditional Owners and industry. Germany's goal of achieving 70 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2045 requires innovative approaches beyond conventional methods. In our feedback on the German Federal Network Agency's draft Grid Development Plan, SuperNode advocates for superconducting cable technology, a cutting-edge solution that effectively balances infrastructure expansion with environmental protection.
