A really interesting piece from our Head of Global Aviation, Carl Dainter. Having spent the last couple of decades working in aviation a lot of it resonates with me, but from a sustainabiliy perspective the idea of a holistic approach is critical. Our impact is very limited when working in siloes, but the delivery partner approach that Mace uses enables us as a team to integrate with the wider functions of the delivery team - working with the design team to ensure efficiency in design, the stakeholder managers to ensure that the community is consulted, working with procurement to ensure the client's vision flows through the supply chain, the construction team to minimise waste, water, and disruption... the list goes on. From working with infrastructure clients over the years, it is clear - if you want to make a positive impact for minimal cost, then consider sustainability in every aspect of the project, from day 1. #aviation #mace #sustainability #climatecrisis

Understanding Airport Construction Safety Construction at airports poses unique challenges due to the combination of ongoing operations, strict regulatory requirements, and the need to ensure safety for all stakeholders involved. Unlike traditional construction sites, airports are bustling hubs with constant activity, including the movement of aircraft, passengers, and airport personnel. This dynamic environment requires construction companies to have a deep understanding of aviation regulations, safety protocols, and operational procedures specific to airports. Moreover, airports are divided into distinct areas: airside and landside. Airside areas, such as runways and taxiways, are highly regulated spaces where aircraft operations take place, while landside areas include terminals, parking lots, and access roads. Each area presents its own set of safety challenges and considerations, further emphasising the need for careful planning and execution of construction activities. Construction companies operating at airports must navigate these complexities while adhering to stringent safety standards to ensure the well-being of passengers, employees, and workers on-site. This requires collaboration with airport authorities, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to develop comprehensive safety plans tailored to the specific needs and challenges of airport construction projects. A fleet of modern people movers, looping 2.1 miles, will soon transport travelers via elevated tracks at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, operating 60 to 65 feet above ground, to the future Intermodal Center, which will house a parking garage, bus and taxi spots, and potentially a Brightline stop. Pending regulatory and funding approvals, construction is expected to start within two to four years and be completed by 2030. Broward County officials promise their versions will be more modern. “We’re a little late getting it,” said County Commissioner Beam Furr. “Most other airports of our size have people movers. The good thing is we get to learn from them, and ours gets to be the most modern.” Also, FLL is getting a light rail transit project connecting the Broward County Convention Center and Port Everglades to the airport’s Intermodal Center, with potential future expansion west to Sawgrass Mills. This 3.5-mile stretch is expected to serve over 130,000 riders annually and could be completed by 2028. The light rail, also elevated, promises to provide efficient and futuristic transportation.
