Our city would benefit greatly by more formally engaging our students, both high school and university/college, because they are allowed to envision our future (as they'll be living it). The students and faculties at SDUSD, UCSD, SDSU, USD, UCSM, Palomar, Sweetwater, and City College all have the energy and ability to bring big ideas to the future of San Diego... that they can champion to build in the future. It's a powerful source of innovation that is being left on the table when discussing our long-standing housing, homeless, and climatic crises. How? Invite them to lead the vision plans for our community plan updates, our historical resources reforms, and housing action plan 3.0.

“This is about our children, our work, our success.” — Dr. Karla Eslinger Great to see so many PhilMO STL & Rolla Members join local educational leaders at the Delmar DivINe for the first of a series of Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education meetings to introduce Commissioner Karla Eslinger, solicit feedback on the 2023-2026 DESE Strategic Plan, and discuss the role of cross-sector partnerships. The room did not hold back — generally agreeing on the priority areas and foundational needs while: ?? urging bolder goal setting; ?? highlighting need for more seats and staffing for quality early child education and full day child care; ?? noting the power of language and need to reframe the narrative around public education; ?? emphasizing the continued need for increased and more equitable funding; ?? discussing workforce implications; ?? reflecting on the similarities and differences across rural and urban districts and suggesting value in encouraging regional approaches; ?? uplifting the need to overcome silos and other barriers to more collaborative, creative approaches… and more. When I (Erin O. Crosby, Ed.D.) worked in West Dallas, residential gentrification was a daily reality with real consequences for residents. But what happens when school choice policies lead to campus gentrification in neighborhood public schools? Too often economically-constrained Black and Brown families lose an already fragile level of agency, voice, and belonging. They can lose their schools. That’s a problem we can and should change. This research brief (written by yours truly, Erin O. Crosby, Ed.D., at SMU Simmons School of Education & Human Development) tells the story of one gentrifying school navigating the consequences of choice policies. I hope contextualizing school gentrification alongside the stories of Black and Brown mothers and school leaders challenges each of us to learn more, and that the policy recommendations lead to equitable change. #schoolgentrification #radicalbelonging #schoolchoice

Local School Councils (LSCs) are a defining and unique aspect of Chicago Public Schools,?playing an important role in school governance and community engagement since 1988.
