Seeking Entry/Junior Level Opportunities in Interior Design Why don’t we see more entry-level roles being posted for everyone to apply? For months, I’ve been searching for my next step in interior design, but every application feels like sending a message into the void. What happened to the days when you could email your CV directly to a company and hear back from a real person? Why do we rely so heavily on online systems and AI to filter candidates, instead of engaging with each individual? I graduated two years ago, and while I’ve gained some experience, I’m not yet at midweight or senior designer level. Shouldn’t my years of study count for something? It sometimes feels like university is no longer a stepping stone to a career but just another checkbox. Interior design is my passion. Working on 2D/3D drawings in CAD and SketchUp is more than just a task for me—it’s therapeutic. Completing a project feels like an achievement. And if I don’t know a software? You can bet I’ll dive in with enthusiasm and learn it quickly. I’m eager to join a company in Scotland, even in a part-time or entry-level role, to grow and build a career from the ground up. I want to develop alongside a team, learn from experienced colleagues, and contribute to meaningful projects. Think back to when architecture and design were done entirely by hand—companies adapted, taught their teams new skills, and grew together. I want the same opportunity to grow with a company, to learn, and to prove my worth. If your team is looking for someone passionate, hardworking, and ready to embrace every challenge, I’d love to connect. Let’s build something great together!

WHAT ARE EMPLOYERS LOOKING FOR IN RECENT GRADUATES/NEW HIRES IN INTERIOR DESIGN OR INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE? This is a question I get asked all the time as a professor. Here is what I tell my students but please let me know if there is something I have missed or if you disagree with my thoughts as someone who is hiring. (These are suggestions for both interviewing and portfolios.) **Be passionate about your designs and be sure to show that you can work together as a team member. A student with an average portfolio but excitement and the ability to collaborate will win out over someone with an amazing portfolio and a negative attitude any day. **I know most of my friends with design firms are excited by diverse portfolios that show a range of styles showing flexibility - in terms of work, rendering techniques, and the ability to think creatively, as well as think technically. **Work that considers the user and that is evidence based is prized. Research is incredibly important to interior designers! **Be sure to show off that you are an interior designer or interior architect. We share many similarities with architects but in your portfolio, be sure to highlight the bits that make us different as well - juicy material boards and stunning furniture selections artfully arranged with accessories, artwork, etc. Don't forget over-the-top interior elevations and axonometrics that highlight the interiors! **Don't forget to add what makes you different in general- photography, sketching, watercolor painting, etc. Stand out from the crowd! A future employer is seeing the same projects from the same schools over and over. What can make you different? Employers? What have I missed?
