Recommend following this one as an example of a brand designed for what’s next. 75% of calories are from protein. Half the weight of the bar is protein. In a share driven, economically challenged environment this level of efficiency will win. The density gives shoppers and retailers what they want with less diesel, packaging, water, shelf space and commodity use. Built for speed. Unsurprising coming from Peter Rahal of Rx, the name is great and the design is modern. Of course it needs to taste good, but RXBAR proved that you just have to taste good enough. One to watch!

Starting the week with a redesign for?Kiki Milk ?? Kiki Milk sell an alternative plant-based milk that’s free from soy and nuts and contains more protein and nutrients than most mass-market alt milks. But you wouldn’t know all of that from your first glance at their website. These great benefits aren't immediately obvious, and it isn’t even clear that it’s a dairy alternative. Yes, people can scroll and learn more, but if you’re not grabbing their attention, why would they? For this redesign, I’ve kept largely the same design structure and focused on the copy, to show how important this alone can be. Instead of being greeted with a general product name, we’re calling out a key benefit of the product and providing all the information a newcomer would need to understand what we’re selling. On top of that, I’ve added different call-outs of the ingredients in the product image and below to provide more opportunity for the information to resonate with the user.

If you missed my last packaging design post, I’ve teamed up with Fish4Ever | Certified B Corporation to create a new line of packaging designs for their organic, pole & line caught tuna, sardines, mackerel, sprats & more ?? ?? As a B Corp, they take sustainability and provenance seriously with all their products. And products with heart deserve storytelling designs which leap off the shelves at you ?? And that’s exactly what we’ve done across their product ranges ?? After all, when you truly believe in the integrity of your products, you want people to sit up and notice! ?? The ambient food market has risen in popularity exponentially ?? - I’m a millennial, so naturally I find TikTok fascinating and chaotic in equal measure, but even I’ve seen the Gen Zedders creating scrumptious meals with our humble cupboard staples, tinned and jarred fish ??? But Fish4Ever go a step up, sourcing whole, organic and sustainable ingredients. It’s why I’m proud to put my designs to their name ?? If you follow the brand, you might start to notice our ‘fantasy fish’ pop up on their packaging. These characters all have their own personality style and would definitely win ‘Best Dressed Fish’ if you ask me ???? ?? For their tuna steak range, the defining look is the ‘wave’ pattern you see here, a nod to the swells and flow of the sea, as well as giving some funky vibes, and who doesn’t want funky on their shelves? ??? Even as a designer — I get more joy from the back of a product’s packaging than the front... Beautiful packaging might get me to pick a product up, but if I don’t like (or understand) what I read on the back - I’m putting it back on the shelf. Just in the past few years, ingredient lists have been slowly but surely getting simpler, smaller and more straightforward. This is a trend I appreciate deeply and one I expect to continue. And with that said, in instances where the brand and design won me over and the ingredients let me down, I don’t hold it against them. I’ve learned how incredibly difficult it is to produce something at commercial scale without sacrificing quality. So it’s even more impressive when it can be done without sacrificing values. So to those brands doing the hard work and to the operations team + co-mans behind them - Respect! ?? Some folks I admire in this regard - Papa Steve's No Junk Raw Protein Bars , MALK Organics , Mid-Day Squares Brew Dr. Kombucha Sol-ti What are some brands you count on to do the incredibly hard work to keep it simple?

I admit it—I'm a sucker for a cool brand, so I'll be on the lookout for some of the products featured in this really interesting story in The Wall Street Journal about how branding and marketing is coming to the produce aisle: "More farmers and produce companies are now moving to a business model they’ve seen work in other product categories: differentiate even the plainest products with fun packaging and an interesting back story, gain customers’ loyalty and sell more units at higher margins. Branding the previously unbranded helps companies use marketing tools that had been unavailable." What does it mean for #foodwaste? Well, if it gets people buying more produce, so that it doesn't spoil on store shelves—great. But if it then ends up spoiling in people's homes, because they bought something because of a cool package but didn't really need it—not so great.
