???????????????? ???????????? ?????? ???????????????? ?????? ?? ?????? ???????? Studio SW and Bohannan Huston, Inc. designed the Valencia County Transit Facility as the home of Rio Metro’s Valencia County Bus services in Las Lunas, New Mexico. ?? Designed in the spirit of the agricultural character of the surrounding area, this building includes sky lights, open ceilings, and structural truss framing as a nod to the locale’s typical hangars, hay storage, and maintenance bays structures. This aspect adheres to a central #StudioSWCrew objective: utilizing opportunities to highlight the comprehensive context of a building, including the landscape surrounding it! ?? This project utilized the Buy America program, a Federal Transit Administration program that helps fund projects that utilize steel, iron and manufactured goods produced In the United States. ?? : Patrick Coulie #ArchitectureIsGood #ArchitectureForNewMexico

The adage “newer isn’t always better” holds particular relevance when comparing the quality of lumber used in home construction over the past century. Homes built in the early to mid-20th century often utilized old-growth timber, renowned for its superior durability and strength. In contrast, modern construction predominantly relies on fast-grown lumber, which exhibits notable differences in quality and longevity. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e7vwi3g6

Exploring Pier & Beam Foundations in Texas Today, we're taking a closer look at the remarkable Bois d'Arc (Osage Orange) piers supporting this 1930s home in East Dallas. Why Bois d'Arc? ? Durability Bois d'Arc wood is known for its exceptional hardness and resistance to rot and insects, making it an ideal choice for foundational support. ? Longevity This wood can last over a century, even in wet conditions, ensuring the stability and longevity of structures. ? Historical Significance In the 1930s, concrete was less accessible and much more expensive. Builders turned to Bois d'Arc, a tree common to North Texas, for its availability and superior qualities. While modern construction often uses concrete and steel, Bois d'Arc remains valued in restoration projects for its historical significance and enduring qualities. The use of this locally sourced, robust wood reflects the resourcefulness of early builders in ensuring their homes stood the test of time….AND THEY DO!! Would you have guessed that the world's tallest timber skyscraper is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin? It is, and they're planning to beat their record with an even taller timber skyscraper. Currently, the Ascent MKE Building holds the record as the tallest mass timber building in the world. A 55-story mass timber structure will soon surpass its 25 stories. Planned renovations to the Marcus Performing Arts Center will make the city a double record holder. Mass timber is more economical, lightweight, and carbon-neutral than steel and concrete. Surprisingly, its charring properties make it even more fire-resistant. Read more in this article in Popular Science: https://bit.ly/3Mcw2Xh. #itcomesfromatree #masstimber #skyscrapers

251m cantilever flight over the Tasman Sea. #inktoberBridges2024 Sydney Harbour Bridge, 502m span, Dorman Long & Co, 1932 The large depth of the truss arch allows for cantilevered construction with no need for temporary stays or towers. During construction, the upper chord is extended with tension beams to fix the semi-arches. When the arch is complete, it is released to form a two-hinged arch. #bridges #inktober #civilengineeering #bridgedesign

Wood remains the top choice for construction in California for several compelling reasons. Its abundance and affordability make it a cost-effective option compared to materials like concrete. Additionally, wood is easier to work with and allows for faster construction times, typically taking 12 to 14 weeks for a complete build. The high mobility rate of Californians and lower taxes on wooden homes also contribute to its popularity. Despite concerns about fire resistance, the benefits of wood construction continue to outweigh the drawbacks. I took this picture because I think that the skill, the brute force, the technology required to keep the sides of this hole from caving in on itself is truly impressive. But, when I look at it now, I just see it as an illustration of why underground parking spaces are so expensive. ?? A several storey deep hole being excavated by heavy machinery in downtown Hamilton, with huge steel cross-braces supporting the walls. #Construction #Parking #UndergroundParking #Condos #ResidentialConstruction #HamOnt #RandomMusings

Today, I was in Eastleigh for the groundbreaking of a 17-storey commercial building that recently received county approval. On my way to the site, I came across this slender structure, which got me thinking: - Is this an extension of the adjacent building? - Is it a standalone structure? - How tall is it planned to go? - Are there any limits on the ratio of plan length to width in such designs? - How might this structure perform under lateral forces like wind or earthquakes, particularly along the weaker axis? Curious to hear your thoughts!"

There are huge advantages in design when a single source can provide both modules and wall panels that integrate into custom structures.
Production has started on a new home we designed for a site in Venice Beach! It'll be our fifth home there. The project uses both Plant Modules and Plant panels -- in order to best maintain the design and optimize for transportation and installation. Our Tejon Ranch plant is the only in the nation purpose built to create both modules and panels.
