Ironically to improve behaviour in the workplace and in the public realm we need more not less debate and disagreement, but of the courteous variety . Many people seem to have lost or not acquired the art of polite but combative debate focusing on the issues and not on the person making them. People now seem either guarded. and buttoned up ( for fear of saying the “wrong” thing) or totally lose control, with little middle ground. I think young people are not seeing or practicing good arguing so don’t learn it . They are more likely to have to experience trolling, dissing and tribal thinking . Politicians like Trump . But also tribalism where the expectation is you agree on all issues rather than examine the merits of each. We need fewer sound bites and slogans, more nuance and evidence. Most importantly we need more and more opportunities to model and practice good polite and rigorous disagreement and debate.

#SundayMorning #MustWatch! Ari Melber, MSNBC discusses how information is very different from #truth with #YuvalNoahHarari. In the social age of citizen journalism, most information is junk. #Truth is very hard to find & to bring it to the masses. It is complicated, costly and painful. Con artists & evilists sell convincing interpretations of reality which is the complete opposite of #truth. The truth sinks to the bottom in our current information ecosystem of connection which uses fiction more. So How Do We Collectively Tilt The Balance In The Favor Of TRUTH? https://lnkd.in/dyYFR8Ch Yuval's new book - Nexus explores more on the above subject. #InformationRevolution #Nexus #AI #information #truths #fiction #gaslighting #ai #journalism #media #socialmedia #politics #misinformation #disinformation

Hey middle school math teachers!??My next animation in the statistics series is FREE on YouTube - Cracking the Case of Measures of Dispersion – The Range & Interquartile Range.?Measures of center are great, but how do we know how spread out the data is? ?In this animation, explore the range and the interquartile range with Natalie, a wildlife biologist.?Then, answer real-world application questions solving crimes with Adena, a forensic scientist!? ? This is perfect for introducing or reviewing these two measures of dispersion in the classroom.?Students will: ·??????Learn how the range is calculated and what it can tell us about the data; ·??????Explore the interquartile range, its ability to exclude extreme values, and how to use it to understand what is typical; and ·??????Analyze and apply the range and the IQR in real-world situations! ? Whether you're a teacher, student, or just curious about the world around you, this video is packed with: ·??????Clear explanations to break down complex concepts; ·??????Real-world applications of statistical concepts; and ·??????Cognitive neuroscience-based learning principles, Universal Design for Learning, and best practices in multimedia design applied to support learning! ? Note:?As the problems included in the animation use forensic science, some topics may be sensitive to some viewers. This video is freely available on YouTube at:?https://lnkd.in/ep4zZSdj ? We are living in a post-heroic and post-service to nation era. Recruiting numbers don’t lie. What I find most troubling is the those who do not believe in anything worth fighting or sacrificing for. I’m reading an academic article that argues against fully autonomous weapons, especially offensive ones, but I fear we are headed in that direction. Star Wars doesn’t seem that far away, a race of humans bred for war and robot armies because society refuses to dirty their hands. At the point we allow robots or humanoids to fight for us we abdicate moral justification, ethical concerns, safety and reliability, and make it easy to perpetuate wars without societal cost according to the author. To avoid this scenario the authors calls for a ban on fully autonomous weapons and a treaty with verification mechanisms. But if citizens of Western nations refuse to serve what alternative is there to defense of the nations. And please don’t tell don’t fight. It’s not that simple.

Each semester I begin classes with a discussion on taking at face value information that piques our interest and/or validates our personal thoughts and beliefs. Students are encouraged to research topics, seek additional sources and expand their own media literacy when consuming information. We are allowing others to think for us. We’re smarter than that. https://lnkd.in/gg9tFf2m

Did you know? Many scientific breakthroughs were initially met with skepticism! That's where science journalism steps in, acting as a champion for this under-appreciated research. Take the "Germ Theory of Disease" for example. In the 19th century, the prevailing belief was that "bad air" caused illness. The radical idea that invisible germs were the cause? It seemed crazy! Early proponents faced resistance, with some even dismissing their work as dangerous.. But here's the inspiring part: science journalism stepped in, hand-in-hand with researchers, to help the public overcome their initial skepticism, and germ theory eventually became widely accepted. Can you think of any other examples where seemingly “crazy” ideas eventually turned out to be true? Tell us in the comments below! #DidYouKnow #SJF24 #ScienceFacts #ScienceHistory
