????It’s great to see schools reporting improved student behaviour after implementing whole of school, evidence-informed approaches to teaching and learning! ??These types of stories highlight the strong relationship between academic engagement and achievement, social-emotional behaviour, and wellbeing. This is why we need integrated, rather than siloed, systems and supports in schools. I talked about this with The Conversation Australia + NZ: https://lnkd.in/gH_uUQxw ??Our research in Multi Tiered Systems of Support is looking at new ways to align and integrate systems and supports in schools to help all students (and teachers) succeed! We can’t wait to share new findings and updates soon! Russell Fox PhD Bradley Bloomfield Karina Stocker Dr Nathaniel Swain

With each Kentucky legislative session, P-12 public education, which comprises over a third of the state budget, takes the spotlight. And the 2024 session that began just after New Year’s and wrapped up Monday was no different. Students are the most knowledgeable about the effects of many education policies, especially concerning the policies of their individual districts. To address problems directly, we need a platform to amplify our voices and perspectives and participate in conversations around the issues. This is huge, and could potentially send shock waves through the admissions policies of elite institutions across the United States. The real question is what pressures now on the Governors and state legislatures of East Coast states to act (in particular, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut) where all of the Ivy League schools are based, and where "legacies" can account for more than 13-14% of intake at Stanford and USC. Institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton have long given preference to children of trustees and major donors to the institutions. Lots of questions for us to consider as this plays through higher education. What unintentional consequences might we foresee in the otherwise noble drive for a level playing field?

This bill will hinder educator’s ability to provide a well rounded educational experience for students and prevent the students from being globally competitive in their futures. It isn’t aligned with national testing and will put Iowa kids at a disadvantage compared to their peers on college entrance exams and career choices. What we do here in the Capitol matters to our constituency, and the bills that we put forth in education, need to build education up and provide the best opportunities to our students, not tear down the process and not tying the hands of experts to teach students what will help them to compete globally in their futures, as well as to understand the world around them better. Understanding global history helps students to be well rounded, in their ability to think critically about the world around them. This Bill dumbs down history for a political point and will further discourage future educators from coming to Iowa and will make it exponentially more difficult to retain the current educators here in the state.

Yes, it’s true that public education in all forms needs a relook, refocus, and refresh from top to bottom. It’s not just about educators, researchers, organizations, and champion policymakers that will drive a new system to rise. It’s when we bring students into that relevant and deep discussion is when we will see a paradigm shift. Public education is about students and only students. A truly transformative education system is only possible when the adults in the room get out of the way and actually tailor a system that is centered on the true benefit of all students and never adults in the room. ??

More families are going to be able to choose their child's school and it's important to learn more about the schools they may be choosing. This point was made by director of national research at EdChoice, Mike McShane. In his new Forbes article, he briefly highlights two studies conducted, one about microschooling and the other about private schooling and civic education; both contradict stereotypes and assumptions. https://lnkd.in/dJD4PREk
