Participation is a key aspect of sustainable development and good governance. Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals emphasizes the role of governance, inclusion, participation, rights, and security in sustainable development. In particular, target 16.7 is to “ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels”. From a rights perspective, there are strong arguments for the participation of children in the governance of their cities, towns, and villages. While child participation is a right in itself, it also leads to the realization of other rights. So how do we as duty-bearers ensure that children as right-holders can enjoy their right to participation? On recent newcomers and the education system. There’s been at least 41,00 people who’ve migrated to the Denver metro area. But how have children of these newcomer families been welcomed into our public schools? “Community members noted that not only is it critical that newly arrived families are made aware of how to interact with the school system, they must feel empowered to be able to advocate for their children within the schools” The ability to advocate is already a challenge for even long-time residents. To come into a new country is a challenge, but to learn how to navigate a new school system is burdensome. How our school systems respond to the recent newcomer increase is what we’ll be covering in our latest topic on ‘Immigrant & Migrant Students’. Attitudes towards and support for homelessness might be shifting if recent news and efforts by key organisations and governments are any measure. Cool.org has partnered with Soup Kitchen and others to highlight 'Some Happy Day', a tragic and touching story played out all too often. These resources have been designed for upper-secondary students to tackle the perceptions, issues, and stereotypes that challenge our understanding of homelessness. This is also matched with support for students to contribute to research around shifting attitudes and behaviours around these issues. Research has shown that disasters do not impact everyone equally. People served by human services systems are often disproportionately negatively impacted by disasters, including children and families, survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, child abuse, and neglect. One way to equitably meet the needs of vulnerable populations is to incorporate human services into the planning and training for disasters. Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness and Response (OHSEPR) has developed a playbook to assist communities, states, local governments, tribes, and territories in evaluating their disaster plans.
