What we’ve been doing in Vancouver to support people experiencing homelessness is not working. You can’t drive through the city without feeling despondent wondering what we can possibly do to meaningfully address what's happening. Still, there's a shift happening. One that uses a bold, innovative approach that’s actually making a difference. One of our nonprofit clients, Foundations for Social Change, is flipping the script on how we support people who are unhoused. Their New Leaf Project is a total reimagining of what’s possible: giving individuals experiencing homelessness unconditional cash transfers to the tune of $7500. You heard that correctly. Recipients of the program receive a one-time, direct cash transfer - no strings attached. And guess what? It’s working. People are finding housing faster, landing jobs, getting healthier, and reconnecting with loved ones. This isn’t a dream; it’s a real solution with real results that is happening now. In this city. In case you missed it, Foundations for Social Change was in the news last week - I've put the link in the first comment. It's worth 2 minutes of your time today. My biggest takeaway? Shattering the myth that people experiencing homelessness aren’t doing enough. It proved that with trust and a little financial support, they can rebuild their lives faster than anyone expected. One participant shared how that money secured her a spot in a co-op and finally gave her stability. This isn’t just another feel-good experiment—it’s proof that trust, dignity, and a little financial boost can turn lives around. Huge props to Foundations for Social Change for proving that innovation and big ideas can break barriers and showing what’s possible when we stop stigmatizing and start trusting people. ??
