This is an important topic for many workplaces, including public safety (which is the focus here). The distinction between mental wellness and mental health is helpful. Both are important to employees and workplaces, but they are not the same and require different attention by supervisors and employers. I also learned something new from this. While I had heard of compassion fatigue and had a vague idea of its definition, I was not fully aware of the body of work around the condition and the many workers it can impact. If your employees deal with trauma, personal difficulties of others, or other similarly emotionally taxing work, I encourage you to learn about compassion fatigue and how to help employees avoid it!

Want to make real change in the workplace you influence? Actively de-stigmatize mental health awareness and action. Saying you support mental health is great, but is really just the beginning. It’s opening the door. In order to walk through it, set a table, and invite people to pull up a chair, you’ve got to do more. Working to actively destigmatize the culture around mental health takes more than passive mentions of support.? Here are some ideas for how you can work to integrate mental wellness into your corporate culture to fight any stigma associated with mental health, directly. ???????????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ??????????-?????? ??? What would happen if once a quarter, or twice per year, everyone on your team received mental wellness support in office? Well, they’d likely come to see this type of maintenance as routine as dentist visits which - of course - are much less extreme when care is routine and regular as opposed to emergency only. ?????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ?????????? ?????? ??????????????????????♀? Let’s be real, some jobs are significantly more stressful than others. So why do we think all wellness programs should be the same? If you manage high-stress environments it would only make sense to infuse extra mental health support into your regular operations. ???????? ???? ???????????????? Don’t sneak off into the night to take vague “personal days” when you really need downtime before a big meeting or professional help after a rough month. Let your team know you’re prioritizing your mental well-being so that you can be at your best for leading.
