The ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Turbo Expo is back for the 2024 edition and at Ergon Research we are excited to attend it again! This year we are presenting another outcome of HPacC-WIND (FF4EUROHPC project), co-partnered by Galebreaker and CINECA, and funded by FF4EuroHPC under the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). In the last years, a #CFD methodology was developed to determine the impact of wind speed and direction on the performance of Air-Cooled Condensers (ACC). In addition, the presence of porous wind screens was modelled to assess their benefits on the power plant performance. At the end of the project, a #digitaltwin was created, combining the ACC heat transfer performance predicted by CFD, a thermodynamic model of the steam cycle and appropriate weather forecasts. This way, it was possible to estimate the payback period for the investment in windshields, which was always less than a year for the selected locations. This research was conducted within the experiment 1104 High-Performance air-cooled condenser in any WIND condition (HPacC-WIND) of the FF4EuroHPC initiative in partnership with CINECA to provide access to its HPC infrastructure.

Thermal profiling of cooled radial turbine wheel Proceedings of ASME Turbo Expo 2020: GT2020 – 14932 Compliance with emission standards such as Euro6d and China6b requires new approaches to the design of thermally loaded automotive components e.g. turbochargers, exhaust valves and manifolds. However, the validation of those new designs and the need for a rapid market entry will require new temperature measurement technologies to provide accurate data across the entire component. A limited number of techniques are currently available, and all have limitations in the harsh operating conditions of turbomachinery. A new technique, called Thermal History Paint (THP), has been developed to overcome these limitations to enable accurate temperature profiles to be recorded in harsh environments. There are limited publications that cover the use of this technique, and this paper demonstrates the capability of the THP through the implementation on turbocharger turbine wheels. Find out more ?? Answer to the Monthly Materials Mystery - July 2024 Thank you for all who commented and provided answers. First Image: It corresponds to rapid ductile mode of failure. An SEM image of the same fracture surface at higher magnification is shown below. This image is from a failed through bolt of a gas turbine. Second image also corresponds to same mode of failure. SEM image of the mid section showed similar ductile fracture features as the first image. However, the larger fracture surfaces on both sides were the result of rubbing. Hence, I would say that it shows rubbing "damage". This image corresponds to a marriage bolt of the same gas turbine. We presented the metallurgical RCFA of the failed gas turbine in the Turbo Expo 2024 last month. In case anyone is interested, please check the proceedings of Turbo Expo 2024 (when it becomes available). It has not been released by ASME on their website yet. Title of the paper - Who won the race to fracture - Torque Tube or Air Separator? Third image corresponds to a through bolt of a different gas turbine and the failure mode of was fatigue as all had guessed. Hope to be back with another mystery next month.

It's a new world record in the nuclear industry! Taking learnings from their Unit 6 MCR, the calandria tube removal at Bruce Power was completed safely and 11 days ahead of schedule, this is the fastest in the history of CANDU refurbishments. This milestone was reached by leveraging the experience gained from the ATS' automated tooling used in the removal of fuel channel components for Unit 6 MCR and applying lessons learned and tooling upgrades for Unit 3 MCR execution, alongside experienced tradespeople who are dedicated to the successful refurbishment of the Bruce Power units. Redudancy of Phase Selection BE Lamme - the Chief Engineer of Westinghouse - said 2 Phase is actually 4 Phase. The rotor had two independent set of coils - not 1 coil with 3 Phase. In some diagram 2 phase is A and B and A’ and B’. This shows it as A B C and D. That is 4 Phases. Each of these phases are 90 degrees apart. 3 Phase is 120 degrees. If a fault exists on any of the Phases - a shift exists that is proportional to the fault. If the T100 fault is 63,000 RMS the phase shift of voltage of a 2000 ampere fault small. With 4 Phases - it does not shift until the Faults exceed T100. This is due to the nature of Kirkhoff Voltage and Current Laws. 3 Nodes on a current and 4 Nodes on voltage is sufficient to maintain 100 percent circuit magnetism in the loop. 3 Phase creates unbalanced magnetism in all 3 cores of the transformer on the first fault. Squirrel Cage Induction motors represent a fault so at very low current- the machines slip. This did not happen with a 4 Phase Motor.
