?? Happening Today! ?? Construction will start on Sacramento's first community resilience center! ?? The California Strategic Growth Council, Office of the Governor - California, California Department of Food and Agriculture, partners from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), City of Sacramento, County of Sacramento, and community leaders from across the area will celebrate the groundbreaking of the first ever #ClimateResiliency center in the Capital City! The La Familia Counseling Center, Inc. will break ground at the site of its future Opportunity Center/Resilience Hub on the corner of 37th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard in South Sacramento. Once constructed, the new building is set to serve as a cooling center during #ExtremeHeat events, while also providing supportive resources like career training, parenting workshops, and healthcare services to residents year-round. “From federal grants to local support, every layer of government has come together to ensure South Sacramento has the resources it needs to thrive in the face of climate challenges. Biggest thanks to La Familia’s Executive Director, Rachel Ríos, and her staff for having the vision and fortitude to tackle income inequality, opportunity, and climate change all at once. #Together, we are building a resilient and empowered Sacramento for generations to come." - Sacramento Mayor, Darrell Steinberg La Familia has received support from county, state, and federal leaders to expand services at the Opportunity Center/Resilience Hub and surrounding neighborhood – this includes $5 million from a CDFA grant, $2 million from the California Department of Public Health, $750,000 from U.S. Housing and Urban Development, and $1 million from the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. They are also part of the first wave of community projects to receive grant writing assistance for their EPA grant from SGC’s Connecting Communities Initiative, a program announced in November 2023 to help local partners statewide access historic federal funding made available through the Inflation Reduction Act. ?? Congrats, La Familia!

Earlier this summer, we released the first brief from their Housing and Climate Equity series. It took a deep dive into federally funded programs from the IRA and IIJA that directly benefit EJ communities and low-income tenants. In this second brief, Just Solutions and Ground Works Consulting embarked on a landscape scan and needs assessment by interviewing thirteen EJ leaders, including three from grasstops organizations and ten from grassroots advocacy and coalition organizations. This brief takes a bottom-up approach to assess the innovative practices at the intersection of climate and housing justice emerging from EJ organizations and the needs on the ground to amplify this crucial work. Today’s National Public Health Week theme is “Climate Change.” It’s the perfect opportunity to spotlight a community partner - @Southside ReLeaf. Last month, we kicked off our first The Equity Equation series focused on life expectancy disparities. One of our panelists was @amywentz, co-founder of Southside ReLeaf. The community-based nonprofit is committed to environmental justice in South Richmond, VA, which has a 20-year gap in life expectancy compared to other areas in the region. A recent study found that areas of Southside Richmond were up to 16 degrees hotter than other parts of the city with more trees and plants. ?? ?? Southside ReLeaf focuses on improving the life expectancy and quality of life for Southside residents by increasing green spaces, reducing pollution and improving infrastructure. To learn more about life expectancy disparities and how its effecting Richmond communities, watch the webinar recording here: https://lnkd.in/e-Ya4gna To learn more about Southside Releaf, visit: https://lnkd.in/enFQDeen. #Nationalpublichealthweek #NPHW

Redlining and Flooding – Breaking the Cycle of Disinvestment Such an educational webinar diving into the history of redlining in New York City and how systemic racism and inequality has impacted socially vulnerable neighborhoods from preparing for the climate crisis. Solutions to address climate justice include: ?Empowering Communities from the Start: Involve community members right from the project’s inception. This isn’t just about checking boxes for public outreach; it’s about genuinely understanding their goals and needs so that these insights can shape the outcomes that truly matter to them. ?Building Bridges through Training and Empowerment: Equip community members with the tools and knowledge they need to advocate for themselves through training. Establish task forces that amplify their voices and concerns throughout the process, ensuring everyone has a seat at the table. ?Championing Equity in Green Infrastructure: Address the imbalance where only wealthier neighborhoods benefit from green improvements. Low-income communities often face the brunt of climate challenges like flooding. In parallel, we must tackle housing security (gentrification) and affordability alongside city resilience efforts, ensuring families can stay in their homes or find safe alternatives within their means. Thank you to Waterfront Alliance and all the speakers for bringing these important conversations to Climate Week NYC! ?gita nandan from thread collective ?Candida Rodriguez from Groundwork Hudson Valley ?Arianna Salazar-Miranda from Yale School of the Environment ?chauncy young from New Settlement ?Furhana Husani, WEDG from Waterfront Alliance #WaterfrontAlliance #Redlining #Bluelining #SocialEquity #ClimateJustice #Community #Empowerment #ClimateLeadership #ClimateInfluencers #ClimateWeekNYC

Having just wrapped up a book on climate adaptive development, I was asked to co-author an op-ed on the Mayor of Seattle's Comprehensive Plan update. It's pretty bad for a mayor who confessed to being concerned about future generations, affordable housing, or climate. Did anyone even read the report?? Seattle used to be a front runner on housing, and while we've never been the climate leader that we could and should be - this plan will be a giant step backwards on all of those fronts. Less space for trees. less biodiversity. Less #urbanheatisland mitigation. Less walkability. Less affordable housing. Fewer housing options. More density and affordable housing limited to toxic arterials and stroads. It's also not even written with the Seattle Transportation Plan in mind. Pretty grim. We need more #sustainablemobility, #climateaction, and #publichealth in our #urbanplanning processes... #citiesforpeople #publichealth #passivhaus #stadtplanung #climateadaptation #naturebasedsolutions #biodiversity https://lnkd.in/gJZEwdaY

If you pop your head up from time to time and put yourself out there, you’re going to cop some flak from detractors who are often have the loudest voices. Some may wonder why I’m getting involved – my motivation is simple: the community is wanting to see this project progress. I am sharing this information because it serves as an important platform for sharing updates on important matters. We hope you will agree that this is an important matter of community interest for the local Trigg-Scarborough community. HAVE YOUR SAY in less than <5 min on the Trigg-Scarborough Coastal Boardwalk access path. This survey is community-led, conducted independently of the City, by the community for the community. Proposals for a boardwalk have been raised since as early as 2005, and we are now seeking community input on a potential boardwalk that would allow the community to enjoy a safe and enjoyable user experience with careful consideration given to environmental impacts and protection. There has been much debate on how the community feel about Trigg-Scarborough Coastal Boardwalk, including levels of support and opposition and now is the time to have your say.
