I am sitting in Heathrow Terminsl 4 with my 2 sons Max L. and Murray Leppard about to check in as we return to Abu Dhabi after a tough but heartwarming week in the UK. I have had the opportunity to think deeply this past week and my mind feels so much better for it. It is something I find does not happen easily in the daily working environment and needs a conscious decision to make it happen. One aspect that I feel erodes efficiency and prevents thinking time is emails. To create more reflective time I try to abide by the following rules. I say ‘try’ as I definitely do not do it on a daily basis, but try each day to do better. 1. Restrict email access time to 40-60 min a day. I set a timer and find this prevent me sanding to other areas on the computer, therefore retaining my focus. 2. If an email to me is over 5 lines, I try to phone the sender or if in work, pop and see them. This prevents the inefficiency of a ‘tennis match’ back and forth train of emails. It also means understanding tends to be clearer. 3. I do not respond to emails where I am cc’d. They are sent to me for information, not reply. 4. I do not send a ‘Thanks for the email’ email. I take it for granted that the sender knows I’m grateful. This prevents wasting my time writing an email and avoids filling the senders inbox with irrelevant emails they have to open. As mentioned, I do not always manage to follow these rules, but on the days I do, I feel I am more reflective, efficient and focussed. I’d be interested to know how others manage time to improve opportunities to reflect and their email traffic. This happens often but today I encountered a situation that highlighted a common misconception in professional services. A potential client compared my fees to the salary of an NRL fullback—a talented, high-profile athlete who’s paid well for their expertise and dedication. While this comparison might seem like a fair way to gauge costs, it also brings up an important point about valuing expertise in different professions. In sports, it's widely accepted that athletes are compensated for years of training, natural ability, and performance under pressure. This is no different from the years I’ve invested in my own field, developing skills, gaining experience, and striving to achieve the best possible results for my clients. What we do as professionals—be it in real estate, finance, consulting, or any other industry, requires a blend of knowledge, insight, and careful strategy. When I take on a client, I’m committed to dedicating my time, resources, and expertise to add genuine value to their lives or businesses. It’s not just about completing a transaction; it’s about achieving the right outcome, handling challenges, and providing an experience grounded in trust and respect. For these reasons, I’ve chosen to walk away from this particular business… I’ve done it before and I will again. Respect for my colleagues, work and its worth is paramount, and I believe in partnering with clients who value that level of commitment.
