Today we talk #culture and #values with the #cleantech Baku ???? batch led by Startup Wise Guys. It's not an accident that the first letter from the acronym: #PERFORM stands for ??urpose and values. Creating an alignment with your cofounders and your core team members around: ? Purpose (Why) ? Vision (What) ? Values (How) is a good starting point. Not just to come up with something that sounds nice. But to have a real, honest discussion and clarify how you move forward. Sometimes what has been tested in one venue returns with a new configuration under a different environment/time to sky rocket and flourish. One truth remains through it all: it is very difficult to thrive and create when we are hungry. Take a look at an accelerator project undertaken in Brazil with Microsoft underwriting. As Rubinstein describes it: “Acelera Partners (was) a "post-accelerator" (and micro-VC) as (they) were taking companies who had graduated from the best accelerators and still were not investible by Qualcomm Ventures and others....” So Acelera Partners was "connecting the dots" and preparing them with proper governance, scalable technology, and getting them on a track to be global.” Isn't this a brilliant idea! “MSFT, Qualcomm and other VCs will surely relate to the value of fostering an ecosystem that ignites entrepreneurial market value growth and viability,” says Rubinstein. Still! We haven’t yet gotten it quite right, have we? What are the fundamental ingredients required to build a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs? I love the sheer challenge of it!

A friend spoke with me. He joined a startup company a few years ago. The company has an ambitious winning aspiration. It aims to be the top 3 player in its industry within 3 years from its formation. But three years on, it has not made much progress with any meaningful outcomes. After some discussion, we noted that while the company has a business strategy, it does not have a clear strategy and plan for execution. When we look at the Chinese character 势(meaning trend or momentum, pronounced as shi), it contains two words: 执(meaning execution, pronounced as zhi) and 力 (meaning strength, pronounced as li). That means that to gain traction and results, having a winning aspiration is not enough. Ability to execute well is key (执行力). Strategy without effective execution is a mirage. Execution without strategy is a hobby. And strategy plus execution without purpose is a like a straw man without soul.
