A little more on our winning entry for transforming a former airstrip into a resilient and thriving urban district….. Climate resilience is the cornerstone of our scheme for Arnos Vale Modern City, directly addressing the challenges of extreme heat, flooding, sea level rise, and biodiversity loss. Our waterfront design shows this commitment, with a layered boardwalk system that doubles as coastal defense. The lower boardwalk is engineered to flood during significant storm surges, providing wave attenuation and safeguarding the higher elevation upper boardwalk, which anticipates future sea level rise. To combat the urban heat island effect, we’ve integrated a network of shaded public spaces, lush gardens, and water features throughout the city. These green spaces are not just aesthetic but functional, capturing stormwater and providing cooling effects. The Warrawarrow River has been revitalized with strategic drainage interventions and natural vegetation to manage flooding and enhance water quality. The preservation and expansion of mangroves along the coastline are key elements of our plan, enhancing biodiversity and providing natural storm buffers. Green infrastructure is woven into the city’s fabric, with climate-sensitive design features that promote airflow, reduce heat, and create comfortable outdoor environments. Our reimagined E.T. Joshua Park serves as a linear green space that connects the city’s districts, offering shaded walkways, native plantings, and flexible gathering spaces that adapt year-round. By embedding climate resilience into every aspect of the design—from transportation and housing to public spaces and natural habitats—our plan ensures that Arnos Vale Modern City is not just equipped to face climate challenges but is poised to thrive in the face of them.
