In documentary, the editor is a key part of the process. They can be thought of similar to a writer on a narrative film. You're responsible for shaping the story and constructing a cohesive narrative. I've found myself doing a TON of writing while editing this current feature UKR. Trying to make sure all the puzzles fit together, or even just composing lines of VO to make scenes have a good structure. I can also say that editing documentary films has made me a better writer #writing #filmmaking #documentaryfilm #videoediting

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN STORYTELLING Spoiler Alert?? Every character in fiction needs a goal that they are working towards. For every goal they chase, obstacles and stakes are what turn plot points into a story. This is no different for the protagonist of the second story in the TWAANO short film. Feel free to check it out here https://lnkd.in/dpRXcr9R. In order to make my character interesting, one layer that I set employs a particular formula. The second story is about Wezi aka Molto, who is a freedom fighter leading a team to burn down a colonial office during the Cha Cha Cha campaign of 1961. To develop a character like hers, I employed a formula I learned and customised through breaking various rules in writing. I call this formula GSU+C. G – Goal S – Stakes U – Urgency C – Conflict The goal is what the protagonist is trying to achieve. In TWAANO, Wezi’s goal is to destroy the colonial office and escape while maintaining her secret identity. The stakes are what the protagonist will lose if they do not achieve their goal. Wezi was going to be captured if she did not escape in time. The urgency is what makes the protagonist have to achieve the goal in the quickest time possible. The authorities are hot on Wezi’s tail. The conflict is the barrier between the protagonist and their goal. Wezi’s escape was stopped by a colonial police officer she’s forced to face. Hope this helps your writing and check out the film on YouTube. #colourculture #tabproduction #scriptwriting #writing #screenplay #screenwriter #twaanofilm

I think writing this adventure is the second instance of me trying to elaborate my note into proper exposition. The first instance was taking a lot of time. I thought it was because I just want to make it really pretty and presentable. Adding more details and notes: a case of over-explanation. But this second instance was as long even without thinking to make it all that pretty. Turns out, the note is actually a web of notes. It just that many. Making me feel as if elaborating context and reference in our brain to a writing, is the same as decompressing something. It is a funny feeling that I kinda like. But I wonder if waiting for it feels as fun? I need to seriously think of a way to make those WIPs (Work in Progress) posts like artists do. ___ #writing

Meeting the producer, Mr. Suresh Babu Daggubati at Ramanaidu Film School was an unexpected moment. Without any prior appointment, I found myself in his presence eager to share a story. After greeting him, I briefly narrated my story capturing his interest. He advised me delve into screenwriting and arranged a meeting with professional screenwriter, Prof Ashok Jankar. That meeting marked a pivotal moment. In just one hour of conversation, I decided to take my writing to the next level. I started my journey of screenwriting under the guidance of Prof Jankar. The first session made me realise that writing a compelling screenplay is far more intricate than I had imagined. It's not about just putting words on paper, it's about creating a world that captivates and resonates with the audience. What I learnt is a well crafted script has the potential to transform millions of lives either by offering new perspectives or by challenging existing norms. Writing, I realised is a journey of self discovery and relentless dedication. Each draft requires refinement, each scene demands precision, every character must be meticulously crafted, every dialogue must serve a purpose, every word must contribute to story's overall impact. The prospect of creating something that could potentially influence and move people is often motivating. Meeting and collaborating with right people at right moment sets oneself on a path of discovery and growth. Writing is a journey filled with challenges, but one that holds the promise of transformation and the power to touch scores of people. ?Dr. Ujjwala Kakarla, July 2024. #Screenwriting #Journey #Discovery #Creation #Challenges #Promises #Transformation

Sometimes, you have to push yourself into places that are not yours to be in. Sometimes, you have to walk into a scenario where you know you won't succeed. Sometimes, these are the places and scenarios that make us aware of having made the right choices. Sometimes, have confidence in your choices and back them up by testing where you are at! ???? #filmmaking #writing #featurefilm #producing #ontrack #letsgo

Is writing a talent? Yes. Is it effortless? Not at all! The idea that anything creative only comes from natural ability is romantic at best, and misery-spreading at worst. Pieces that make it to the public eye are the result of ideation, pre-approvals, drafts upon drafts, countless synonym searches, and editing that’s sometimes so extensive the document looks like the end of a b-horror film. Sometimes amazing works don’t get the recognition they deserve because the platform they debut on isn’t the right fit. Sometimes writers will hold on to absolutely incredible pieces because the little monster of doubt that lives in their mind speaks louder than the courage of their conviction. And sometimes writers that are known for one sort of writing really actually want to pursue another, but bills need to get paid and food has to find its way to the table. Romanticising the arts is great - life is tough and we should find ways to appreciate each other’s efforts. We should also take a balanced perspective. Besides celebrating the end result, let’s give credit where credit is due - in the hours and hours of behind-the-scenes work. #Writing #FreelanceWriting #WorkRecognition #GoodThingsTakeTime

I’m a screenwriter, but like many of us, I keep a day job. Here’s how I stay prolific while balancing the 9 to 5. ?? I manage multiple projects at once. Painstakingly focusing on one project at a time doesn’t move the needle for my writing career. Right now, I have a short film in post-production, a graphic novel being illustrated, and a feature film moving into the script phase from an outline. I don’t write for hours every day. Between work and life, it’s hard to sustain a daily grind. Instead, I find blocks of time every few days or weeks. Because my projects are in different phases with collaborators, there’s always downtime to switch focus to something else. Most importantly, I don’t beat myself up for not writing daily. To make this sustainable and enjoyable, I treat it as a craft—steady and incremental. By year’s end, I’ll have at least one or two pieces I’m proud of. How do you maintain a writing practice while working full-time? #Screenwriting #Filmmaking #Productivity

As I work through a plethora of scripts I’m judging for a prominent film fest, I’m recognizing what makes a script stand out. A good script must be a combination of interesting writing, clear character progression and interesting plot. Seems obvious, no? It’s harder than it seems. Overly verbose descriptions can makes reading difficult. Burying important story elements or information in too much dialogue waters down your scripts effectiveness in delivering story. Having scenes that don’t move the story is a drag. Often less is more and when it comes to screen writing, I find this to be especially true. Take out some of the fluff from your scripts and see how they read. I suspect most 130 page scripts could be twenty pages shorter if they were approached with an editors eye. Also, you might save yourself a lot of budget by reducing your page count! I’m not saying movies need to be shorter, but make sure you film isn’t longer than it needs to be. Happy writing and then editing that writing.

So, you want to be a screenwriter? Here's what it takes to stand out: 1?? Shoot the film in your head. Before pen hits paper, imagine every scene, character movement, and dialogue exchange. Visualize the entire story. 2?? Understand the craft. Study scripts, watch films critically, and read about industry trends. 3?? Write and rewrite. The first draft is rarely perfect. Writing is rewriting. 4?? Collaborate and take feedback. Filmmaking is a team sport; your script must resonate with others. 5?? Persist. Every screenwriter faces rejection. Learn, adapt, and keep writing. What's your next step toward mastering the craft? Ready to dive deeper? I'm oscillating between tech and Writing?...No—I'm enjoying both. These are two fields where creativity is truly respected. Blending them can lead to countless positive outcomes. However, I prioritize one thing above all: time. With time, I can do whatever I want—writing code, editing videos, thinking about stories while my PC renders something, and finally, writing. All of this is possible, but only if time is on my side. #writing #filmmaking #tech #creativity
