2024 SOUTH AFRICAN WINE TASTING -TORONTO Grape is not indigenous to South Africa. The Dutch planted he first vineyards in the 17th century, and have been producing wine ever since. Today, South Africa is world’s eight largest wine producer with an annual of 320 million litres on average. As South Africans don’t drink much wine approximate 70 percent of the wine produced must be exported, which makes South African wines always a good value. Most South African wines are well balanced, fruity, medium bodied and generally consistent every year since the climate changes minimally. What will happen in the future with the climate change is unknown. Recently 12 wineries poured their wines to the media. Of the 65 wines available I tasted 32 and scored them as follows: (Only those that I scored 88 and above are listed). Whites Chardonnay, 2022, Glen Ellen 89+/100 Chardonnay, 2022, Jardin 88+/100 Chenin Blanc Reserve, 2023, Forrester 88/100 Terre Noir Chenin Blanc, 2023, Forrester 89+/100 Chenin Blanc, 2019, Avondale 90/100 Metis Sauvignon Blanc Pascal Jolivet, 90/100 Klein Constantia 90/100 Vin de Constantia Constantia (Sweet) 91/100 Red wines The Red, 2018, Journey’s End 92/100 Syrah, 2021, Bruce Jack 90/100 Cabernet Franc, 2020, Raats 91/100 Cinsault, 2022, Raats 89/100 Grenache, 2022, Forrester 94/100 Renegade, 2021, Forrester 89+/100

Think the best wines always come with the biggest price tags? Think again. In wine, there’s a long-standing myth that price equals quality. If it’s more expensive, it must be better, right? Not necessarily. While high-dollar wines often reflect factors like branding, scarcity, or even historical prestige, there are countless bottles out there delivering incredible quality without the hefty price tag—especially from regions like Greece. Take Greek reds, for example. Bordeaux might grab the spotlight, but Greek winemakers are quietly crafting bold, complex reds with layers of history and flavor—all at a fraction of the price. Varietals like Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko often punch far above their price point, showing that excellence doesn’t have to come with an intimidating price tag. I’ve seen this firsthand. My husband and friends regularly ask me to open a $30 Naoussa Xinomavro when they come for dinner. They love the flavors and textures but also the price tag! That’s not to say pricey bottles aren’t worth the hype—they absolutely can be—but it’s a humbling reminder that great wine can come from unexpected places and at approachable prices. Wine is about discovery, after all. The best bottle is the one you love, and sometimes it’s hiding in plain sight at a price that feels like a steal. What’s a wine you’ve tried that surprised you with its quality, price aside? I’d love to hear your recommendations for the hidden gems out there! And thank you, of course, to Artemis Kohas, LMHC for introducing me to Greek wine! #WineMyths #GreekWine #WineLovers #WineEducation

Rich and lush.... I would never use words like rich and lush to describe a wine. But it seems that wine writers and somms tend to agree that these two words suit Viognier wines well. >> That’s why I’m thrilled to host a virtual wine tasting class this Friday, featuring two Viognier wines from opposite parts of the world. [?? to register in the comment ? ] The beauty of Viognier lies in its versatility. It produces a wide range of wine types and styles: >> sparkling and still, >> dry, >> medium-sweet and sweet, >> late-harvest wines, Each style offering unique profiles depending on the ripeness of the grapes at harvest. This diversity is what makes exploring Viognier a fascinating experience. What aromas to expect? ?? stone fruits, such as peach and apricot. ?? violets ?? tangerine, ?? mango, ?? honeysuckle, ?? rose ?? vanilla ?? smoky oak And probably more. >> But remember,?you don't need to be a wine scholar to truly enjoy and appreciate wine.
