Its curriculum combined fine arts, crafts, and technology, promoting an integrated approach to design that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Bauhaus' purpose was to bridge the gap between art and industry by integrating artistic creativity with modern manufacturing processes. The school emphasized the importance of simplicity and functionality, principles that continue to influence graphic design today. The building may be long gone, but the idea is still alive. This is the week of London Design Festival. The Festival is a fascinating series of events, talks, projects and exhibitions throughout the entire city. There is plenty of conceptual art here, but most of the program deals with real design application – from light to space to furniture and product innovation. Plus, there is lots of fusion of ideas, for example, sustainability mixed with 3D visual worlds. ? It is also interesting to see how brands are involved – and again, the range of companies participating is vast. There are the furniture grands like Boffi and Cassina, but also cars like Lotus or Technogym sports equipment. And there are installations in various business locations, for example, the famous Fortnum & Mason store in Picadilly. Apart from design in business, there are also important conceptual exhibitions, for example, a show devoted to exploration of the interplay between design and freedom of speech. ? In short, if you can spare some time and attention for this, it will be greatly rewarding. This Festival is a showcase of what does design stand for now and all its different facets – technology mixed with current agenda, business, and our sensory perception of the world. ? In Andratx, Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, what was once the largest chicken farm in the island chain, has adapted and been repurposed into an art gallery and cultural center. The original chicken coops on the property were converted to an art gallery, studios for visiting artists, and a theater. The main house on the property, which is over 300 years old, has been recently restored to be rused again as a space for visitors to stay as well as an office to oversee everyday activities on the property. The primary structure has been refurbished with the original materials used to build the home, leaving them exposed for a stronger connection to the historic prevalence of the property. An important part of the project was recycling and reusing as much of the original structures and materials as possible. The designers were able to repurpose old furniture, original stone and glass found around the site, and repurpose it within the renovations. Historic preservation and adaptive reuse projects such as this, bring new life and meaning to historical sites while also making sure they are maintained in the long term. While redevelopment can be carbon intensive, it is significantly less damaging than new construction overall. **Aesthetic uniformity limits cultural expression** There's a tendency for design trends to converge towards a homogeneous international style. Architecture and design are forms of non-verbal communication that convey meaning about a region’s history, culture, and values. When these elements become standardised, cultural expression is reduced. For example, museums, which serve as custodians of cultural narratives, risk becoming indistinguishable from one another, offering similar visitor experiences regardless of their geographical or cultural context. These global trends dilute local cultural identities and traditions. Designers can combat this by taking a vernacular approach, by incorporating local materials, techniques, and motifs. By engaging local communities and artisans in the process we can ensure that the resulting architecture and design reflect the local context, establishing a true 'sense of place'. #designthinking Photo @unsplash

A great trip to Eindhoven. Really interesting breadth of work on show. Some things we noted; > Sustainability: Designers are continuing to look for broader approaches to delvering environmentally conscious solutions, going beyond mere material selection and recyclability to consider societal changes in consumption. > 3D Printing: Being explored and utilised by designers in all sectors - from jewellery and textiles, to buildings and landscapes. > Design Process: When you think Phillips, it’s hard not to picture prestine laboratories and white coats. However, if their exhibition is to be believed, they follow the same fluid, and often messy, ‘design-thinking’ approach many of us swear by.

I recently visited the stunning exhibition "Circle of Light" at Gropius Bau and I couldn't help but be captivated by the mesmerising round tubes and round holes by Nancy Holt. They have a captivating way of playing with the light in different moments of the day and also changes the perspective! ???????? For instance, when you look through this tube and catch a glimpse in the mirror, you witness yourself from an entirely distinct #perspective compared to any other point. The concept seems logical, but the actual impact it has is truly astonishing. This became so obvious when I attempted to capture this photograph... As I walked through the exhibition, these beautiful round tubes reminded me of something else: the round mirrors I used as wall decor.? The way the light reflected off the tubes created a mesmerising play of shadows and patterns, much like the way the mirrors enhanced the natural light in the apartment. It's incredible how art and design can make a difference and transform our surroundings and evoke different emotions. The exhibition offered a unique perspective, allowing me to see the world from a different point of view. It reminded me that even the simplest #objects can hold great beauty and significance when seen through the lens of #art. If you're in the area, I highly recommend visiting the "Circle of Light" exhibition. It's a truly immersive #experience that will leave you inspired and in awe of the power of light and perspective. ??
