It is not just the CEO of Science Based Targets initiative who trucks in BS, but also its Chief Technical Officer Alberto Carrillo Pineda, who sent the attached message to the Technical Advisory Group (and a similar one to the Scientific Advisory Group and other expert groups). He wrote: "I want to reassure you that SBTi deeply values your expertise, feedback, and contributions to our work. Your input is invaluable and critical to the integrity of our standards." Is he consciously or unconsciously insulting the intelligence of TAG members? I mean, the SBTi Board just literally ignored the TAG, making a decision without seeking TAG consultation -- which is the polar opposite of "deeply valuing" blah blah blah. It's critical to recognize that this attitude is not a new development. Alberto and other SBTi leaders have a consistent pattern of making performative rhetorical flourishes as if they create their own reality, when in fact these assertions fly in the face of the evidence that's clearly visible to all. This flagrant disregard for the TAG (while professing appreciation) is precisely the same dynamic from 2018, when SBTi leadership *radically* transformed from providing guidance on 7 SBT setting methods to disallowing ALL independent methods, and only allowing its own methods. WITHOUT EVEN INFORMING ITS TAG... The level of disrespect is simply astounding. My sources tell me that Alberto opposes offsets, which may be true, but his message demonstrates that the governance dysfunction at SBTi runs much much deeper than this current crisis around offsets. Governance dysfunction is endemic to SBTi's DNA. The note on forwarding media requests is ironic and paternalistic -- not only is Alberto gaslighting the TAG, but to rub salt in the wound, this "invitation" suggests that TAG members cannot represent their own perspectives to the media -- and further, that they would wish to share their media contacts with an organization that disrespects them. I remember the first TAG member to leave, back in 2018, noting that the TAG served exclusively as a fig leaf for SBTi. Plus ?a change...

?? Food for thought... What is a board member? what do you expect from him or her? The right place to get a clue is the European Board Diploma training by ecoDa a.s.b.l - The European Confederation of Directors Associations. ? I am very proud to have passed the Diploma and honoured to have followed this high level European training with a very inspiring cohort of board members and board members to be from all over the world.?? Key take way:? ??Between the investors/ shareholders and the management, board members play a key role in companies, but it is often underestimated, misrepresented, or, on the contrary, feeds illusionary expectations. Depending on countries’ regulations, the leadership is not shared in the same way in Italy, Germany, France, Sweden... : this diversity of approaches is an interesting grid to decipher invisible/underlying misunderstanding between Member States and decision makers from different economical backgrounds... ?? More and more, board members stand at the crossroads of the conversations on shareholders vs. stakeholders capitalism - and are expected to find the right balance. As our collective appreciation of a company's performance is evolving, their responsibilities are increasing - on ESG, AI, cybersecurity... : should not they be on the edge of the latest developments and know how companies should make the most of it? Hence the profiles around the table could be another key feature to read the companies' different strategies and approaches to the market. ? Corporate governance is the key word: I believe it is all about collective intelligence and leadership, diversity, experience and, at the end, human qualities. A few call outs from my experience in becoming a chartered member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand over the last two years: 1. I think everyone, assuming you're competent in business, should reflect on the civic duty to get involved in a non-for-profit board. Yes, this means volunteering and committing a substantial amount of time outside work hours. We are all time-poor and would prefer to apply our skills in paid roles. However, there are so many charities and other not-for-profits out there that enhance the public good and desperately need a range of skillsets to help them survive & thrive. Earlier this year I stepped in as board secretary of the Auckland Boys Choir. It's a fascinating NFP with a 50+ year legacy that has suffered severely post COVID to sustain a minimum viable role of boys. Most young boys with great treble voices would much rather play football or video games - and their parents often have too little time to support such a commitment (notwithstanding the immense cultural and social benefits these boys and their families gain). There is a lot to do to turn this organisation around and it is testing the very limits of my business development & marketing knowledge to rebuild the group numbers. It's also been rewarding to be part of. 2. Now more than ever, all boards (commercial or NFP) must ensure they are expanding their diversity of viewpoints and experience. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this trending in the right direction on average in the last year - although the IoD has been doing an outstanding job to address this. It’s still at the discretion of individual boards. Reflecting on my recent foray into sustainability-related consulting, our country and many others seem to have plunged into Gartner's "trough of disillusionment" with sustainability & the critical related area of climate mitigation. Even I've found myself losing the faith in the last few months. I'm heading along to the Chapter Zero NZ's breakfast tomorrow morning on "Profit and the planet: (In)convenient truths", but I'm more dubious than ever on the trajectory we're heading in towards 2030 and beyond. It would be great to see every relevant board having a clear sustainability champion who is empowered to help set the right direction and hold the organisation accountable to sustained progress over time. 3. Finally, just acknowledging how great the Institute of Directors in New Zealand has been in my experience over the last two years. A particular shout-out to Briar Naish for all your work, Kevin McCaffrey for being a helpful sounding board, and Susan Hansen who made a strong impression on me as lead facilitator on my Company Directors' Course.
