The “Project Highlights” booklet is an overview of Department of Planning and Development (DPD) projects that were either initiated or completed between January and December of 2024. Under the leadership of Commissioner Ciere Boatright, DPD shepherded more than $11 billion in new projects through the Plan Commission process, outpacing the totals for 2022 and 2023 combined. The small, medium and large grant programs meanwhile allocated more than $400 million toward more than 600 business development projects, supporting $1.7 billion in private investment across the city. The featured projects are just a portion of DPD’s accomplishments, but they collectively represent the wide variety of transformative community development initiatives under Mayor Brandon Johnson to foster a more equitable and sustainable Chicago. Each project was accomplished through the hard work of staff in partnership with elected officials, businesses, community leaders, private developers and other partners. DPD staff looks forward to implementing many other improvements for a more equitable Chicago in the year to come.

Let’s start a conversation! Last week, Allison Farole, MPA, CEM, MiPEM and I discussed the concept of building community preparedness. In this, we shared an observation that our current culture has shifted away from prioritizing and fostering a sense of “community.” Modern-day society coupled with technology advancements have shifted our mind-set. We are less connected to our neighbors, colleagues, schools, towns, city-centers, etc., than at any other time in history. And our long-standing viewpoint/sense of what “community” is, no longer exists. So, the QOTD is this: How do you build community preparedness, without community being a part of your culture?

Mecklenburg County is launching a 5-year Consolidated Planning process as required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program. This strategic planning process will gather input from the public and data which is intended to inform the allocation of federal dollars to create better housing, improve living environments and increase economic opportunities, especially for low– and moderate-income individuals. Participants will have the opportunity to attend two Community Visioning Workshops and receive feedback about the process over the next several months.
