??? What would happen if we built our communities around places? ?? ?? Sharing this great booklet on Placemaking by Project for Public Spaces outlining how placemaking can help transform public spaces, inspiring people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. So what is Placemaking? ?? “Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm to maximize shared value. ?To me, it’s a true form of #archtivism, merging architecture and activism, empowering communities, to create inclusive and thriving urban places. ?? More than just promoting better urban design, placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution. ?? In short, public spaces witness many tragedies and triumphs of the commons. That’s why getting placemaking right matters. The ten issue areas where placemaking can have the most transformative impact are: equity & inclusion; streets as places; architecture of place; innovation hubs; market cities; place governance; sustainability & resilience; rural communities; creative placemaking; and health.” ??11 Principles for Creating Great Community Places?? Placemaking goes beyond just aesthetics. It's about creating spaces that: Foster social connections:?Bringing people together and encouraging interaction. Enhance quality of life:?Making neighbourhoods more vibrant and enjoyable. Promote economic development:?Creating attractive spaces that can draw businesses and residents. Reflect local identity:?Shaping spaces that represent the unique character of a community. Placemaking is a powerful tool for shaping our cities and towns into places that are not just functional,?but also meaningful and enjoyable for everyone. There are a few reasons why placemaking remains a topic of discussion and can be misunderstood: Competing Priorities Short-term gains:?City planning often prioritizes immediate economic benefits over long-term social and environmental goals. Traffic flow:?Car-centric infrastructure can still dominate,?prioritizing vehicle movement over pedestrian and public spaces. Difficulty in Measurement Subjectivity:?It can be challenging to quantify the impact of placemaking on things like social connection and well-being. Long-term benefits:?The positive effects of placemaking may take years to become fully apparent. Public Misconceptions Focus on aesthetics:?Some might see placemaking as simply beautification projects,?overlooking the social and functional aspects. Gentrification concerns:?There's a fear that successful placemaking projects can lead to rising property values and displacement of existing residents. However,?there's a growing recognition of the value of placemaking.? As cities grow,?well-designed public spaces become even more crucial for social interaction and a sense of community. There's a growing focus on walkable,?sustainable cities with a strong sense of place. Is data and advocacy the answer? Tools are being developed to better measure the positive impact of placemaking on social and economic factors. By promoting awareness and demonstrating the benefits,?placemaking can move from a misunderstood concept to a standard practice in creating vibrant and liveable communities. So get out there. Speak up. Promote. #urbandesign #cities #planning #placemaking #streets #Launceston

Cities are often seen as collections of buildings and streets. But for an urban placemaking professional, a place is much more than that. It's a feeling – a sense of vibrancy, belonging, and connection that draws people in and makes them feel welcome. We've spent so much time focusing on functionality that we've forgotten the emotional core of our cities. But what if we could design spaces that evoke specific feelings? Imagine a bustling farmers market that sparks joy, a quiet park that fosters contemplation, or a vibrant pedestrian walkway that ignites creativity. Reclaiming the Heart: Reclaiming Space. Here's how urban placemaking can help us reclaim the feeling in our places: * Community Engagement: Put people at the centre of the design process. Gather resident input, stories, and aspirations for the space. * Sensory Design: Consider the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and even tastes that contribute to a place's atmosphere. * Prioritize People: Design spaces for interaction, not just movement. Encourage lingering, gathering, and spontaneous encounters. * Celebrate Local Identity: Incorporate local history, culture, and art to create a unique sense of place. * Activate Underused Spaces: Transform neglected areas into vibrant public spaces that foster community engagement. By focusing on these elements, we can breathe life back into our cities. We can create places that function well and evoke positive emotions, fostering a sense of belonging and sparking connections between people. Let's move beyond concrete jungles and build places with heart! What are your ideas for creating places that resonate with people? #LivableCities #PublicSpace #Wellbeing #Urbanism #Launceston

#Placemaking has become such an important academic and practical concept today. Is this something new? Of course not! It’s something we had forgotten along the way as the world progressed into a high speed hyperloop called “faster progress”. The concepts were always well embedded in our urban and rural fabric across space and time. Time to consciously bring it back into practice. Are you with me on this ? #landscapeandurbandesign #atkinsrealis #engineeringabetterfuture #citiesofthefuture

This, more than anything, is the keystone of the #StrongTowns message: There is a timeless set of principles that informed the way cities were built and developed, created by trial and error over millennia. The US (and Canada) leveraged vast land and unprecedented wealth to abandon those principles and create entirely new ones on an enormous scale. Unfortunately, we are now experiencing many negative, unintended consequences of this multi-decade experiment. Virtually everything else the Strong Towns movement advocates is an offshoot of this idea. I’ve been researching ancient and medieval cities and how they evolved through techniques we now call placemaking. What I’m finding is astounding, far beyond even my expectations. Have no doubt - we are not inventing new principles. We’re simply rediscovering them and figuring out how they apply to our current age.

We're thrilled to share our key insights from another impactful study: "Augmenting Places: The Impact of Placemaking on Behavioral Intentions." This study reinforces the transformative power of placemaking and public art that we witness every day. More specifically, the dynamic study from The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University, The Daniels Corporation., Lemay, Entro, and MASSIVart engaged 598 participants with various settings such as office spaces, outdoor courtyards, lobbies, and transit stations to measure the difference in responsiveness to locations with and without placemaking interventions. Our journey in implementing over 350 projects in public spaces worldwide clearly demonstrates that placemaking initiatives not only boost community engagement and economic prosperity but also cultivate meaningful connections within public spaces. ?? But let the study speak for itself! https://lnkd.in/dZFqzPKB #placemaking #publicart #interactiveart

Rethinking Public Spaces: An Ecosystem Approach to Placemaking Traditional placemaking has long overlooked the diverse non-human stakeholders that share our urban environments. It's time to design vibrant public spaces that prioritize native flora, fauna, and natural systems. This ecosystem-based approach harnesses essential services like air/water purification, temperature regulation, and pollination - enhancing resilience and sustainability for both human and non-human city dwellers. By embracing the interconnectedness of urban ecosystems, we can create truly inclusive, biodiverse public spaces that benefit all who dwell within. Who's ready to challenge human-centric design traditions? https://lnkd.in/dwj7NgND #Placemaking #UrbanDesign #Sustainability #Biodiversity

The Art of Public Space-Making: Shaping Communities and Environments Public spaces are more than just physical locations; they are the heartbeats of our cities, influencing emotions, fostering connections, and defining the character of those who inhabit them. As city managers and urban planners, it is crucial that we recognize the profound significance of public space-making in our communities. Impact on Human Experience Public spaces serve as canvases where everyday life unfolds. They influence our moods, behaviors, and interactions, offering settings for leisure, socialization, and cultural expression. Whether it’s a bustling city square, a serene park, or a vibrant market, these spaces become integral to the fabric of urban life. Role in Urban Planning In the realm of urban planning, the design and management of public spaces are paramount. They contribute to the livability and sustainability of cities, enhancing both physical and mental well-being. Thoughtful consideration must be given to accessibility, inclusivity, and functionality to ensure that these spaces cater to the diverse needs of all users. Creating Spaces for All As city managers, our responsibility lies in creating public spaces that are inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of size or number of users. Whether accommodating families seeking recreation, individuals seeking solitude, or communities celebrating cultural events, these spaces should seamlessly integrate into the urban landscape, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike. The art of public space-making is a dynamic process that requires creativity, foresight, and a deep understanding of community needs. By prioritizing the creation and maintenance of these spaces, we not only enhance the quality of urban life but also contribute to a sustainable and resilient future. Let us continue to champion the importance of public spaces as essential elements in shaping vibrant and cohesive communities. #publicspaces #publicspacemaking #urbanism #shehersaaz #?????? #??????? #urbanplanning #creatingspacesforall #urbandesigner
