It can improve access to services, address workforce shortages, and reduce health system #costs. But the success of AI depends on governance, #equity, #data, #regulations, #policies, and more. The rapid growth of AI underscores the urgent need for this roundtable, which will drive collaboration to harness AI for health, while ensuring a focus on #justice and #inclusion, and protections for #humanrights and #privacy. Aligning with WHO’s support to countries on the ##digital transformation of health systems, this roundtable aims to: -initiate discussions around a possible renewed?Global Strategy on Digital Health and AI (2026-2030), -explore priorities for the Global Initiative on AI for Health (GI-AI4H); -identify priority areas for guidance, technical support and consensus-building; and distribute responsibilities across #stakeholders, including resource mobilization to support Member States in leveraging AI to strengthen health systems. ? In October 2023, President Biden signed a landmark executive order on AI, outlining a vision that goes beyond technology for technology’s sake. It’s a vision where AI plays a direct role in revolutionizing healthcare for aging populations, managing chronic diseases, and addressing health equity. Here’s what’s happening: ?? AI Task Force: The Department of Health and Human Services is shaping policies to ensure AI tools are safe, effective, and accessible, from drug development to public health. ?? In the healthcare industry, I'm a big believer that the patient should always come first. Our top priority, above all else, should be patient care. And we can't deliver quality patient care if we're ignoring the current inequities within the healthcare system. Luckily, that's where digital tools like AI can come into play. In this piece, Carol Cruickshank, Cian Wade, and Junaid Bajwa share a few ways that AI can improve some current healthcare inequities: ?? Identifying at-risk patients. With AI, providers can identify and proactively reach out to patients at risk of poorer health outcomes. ?? Overcoming communication barriers. By streamlining and automating administrative tasks related to patient access and assessment, providers can refocus their time on clinical work. ?? Addressing differences in access to resources. AI empowers patients in under-resourced parts of the country to reliably triage themselves and subsequently seek health care through the most appropriate avenue. ?? Here are some case studies where investments in AI have made a significant impact: 1. AI in Managing Chronic Diseases: In several EU countries, AI-driven platforms are being integrated into chronic disease management programs. These platforms analyze patient data to help healthcare providers monitor patients remotely and provide timely interventions when necessary. This not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces the burden on healthcare resources by minimizing emergency visits and hospital readmissions. 2. Predictive Analytics for Public Health Management: According to a *McKinsey report( attached below) *on healthcare transformation through AI, predictive analytics has enabled health systems to anticipate health risks. How do we solve health inequity? It's a question that we've been asking ourselves in the healthcare industry for years, but there has never been one clear answer. Until now? AI is a promising solution for many of the challenges posed by health inequity. As this article describes, AI has enhanced analytic abilities to identify at-risk patients, overcome communication barriers, addressing differences in access to resources, reducing the impact of human bias, and increasing diversity in clinical trials. However, as this article also critically points out, in its current state AI in healthcare isn't powerful enough. Implementing these large-scale systems takes resources that many hospitals simply don't have. As a result, not everyone is able to access powerful AI for health equity, especially communities who are already under sourced in terms of health services. How do we bridge this gap? We need targeted funding and support for AI equity programs in healthcare around the nation. Whether it's by financially incentivizing investment, nonprofit support, or through individual donors, bringing AI to the masses is an essential first step to assessing its potential when it comes to health equity. New advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital health technologies are unlocking a wide array of opportunities in healthcare—many of which stand to have a big impact on primary care. Investment is flowing rapidly: since 2023, more than 280 U.S. digital health startups with AI/ML-enabled solutions have raised $6.3 billion in funding. Recognizing the potential for these technologies to improve primary care, the American Academy of Family Physicians, in partnership with Rock Health, has launched a new project aimed at exploring the use of digital health and artificial intelligence in family medicine and primary care. The initial phase of this project involves a survey whereby we are seeking to better understand family physicians’ knowledge and exposure to digital health and artificial intelligence tools and resources. This survey will serve as the foundation for our collaborative work moving forward. We invite and encourage all family physicians to take a few minutes to complete this important survey before November 4. www.aafp.org/ai
