Over the last two weeks, I completed my 15th race from Chicago to Mackinac and my first Bayview to Mackinac race. In total, this was 537 nautical miles of sailing through all conditions. We saw storms that crippled boats ahead and led to a man overboard rescue, and light to no breeze, requiring much patience and focus to keep the boat moving. It took a team of 14 people and their families supporting each other along the way to make this possible. Every time I come home from a Mac race, I feel like my cup is full again. From getting in the groove of tuning our sails to optimize our speed at all times, to the laughs that make you cry, and the camaraderie of the sailing community when you hit the island, there’s nothing I’d rather take a break from work to do.
This year, our team has focused on giving an extra 10%. We’ve improved our communication, tried new techniques, and have learned to trust each other even more to do our jobs well. The extra effort that we’ve put in shows. I firmly believe that this translates to more than just sailing. I can take a step back to apply what I’ve learned over the past 20 years of racing sailboats to other aspects of my life, including my team at work. If we can all put in even just an extra percent, this will be visible in our products, user satisfaction, and satisfaction within our jobs.
