I've always loved the Olympics, but the @Paralympics and @TeamUSA hold a special place in my heart. As a physical therapist for 25 years, I’ve dedicated my career to working with people with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and children at @childrensatl. These incredible athletes remind us of the power of perseverance and determination. I encourage you to tune into the Paralympic Games and show your support for this amazing community! ?? https://lnkd.in/eBscceW9 Let's continue to champion inclusion and strength, both on and off the field. @APTAtweets @apta_ga #ReElectMesha #Paralympics #TeamUSA #District56 #Vote2024

Is all work created equal? Dr. Ludwig Guttmann opened a spinal injuries centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain, in 1944. This was to provide rehabilitation in the form of sport to injured war veterans, whatever their nationality. In July 1948, on the day of the opening of the London 1948 Olympic Games, Dr. Guttmann organised the Stoke Mandeville Games, a competitive wheelchair race, and the beginning of the paralympic movement was born! Disability history can highlight brilliant stories of collaboration; this is one of them. It shows how people can work together no matter what their injuries or conditions and create a worldwide movement. Despite the continued effort of the Paralympics to gain equal financial backing with the Olympics, this has not yet been achieved. [Video Description: Text reads Disability, Employment and Livelihood 14th Nov to 20th Dec 2024. In the centre is a photo of Ludwig Guttmann wearing a black dinner jacket and bow tie. He also has a blue lanyard around his neck] #UKDHM2024 #UKDisabilityHistoryMonth #Paralympics #Work #Livelihoods #FightForEquality

Today is the first day of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time dedicated to recognizing and understanding the unique workplace challenges and opportunities faced by individuals with disabilities. Did you know? -It has been estimated that up to 27% of Americans live with a disability that impacts their daily life? This means 1 in 4 adults have some type of disability. -As of 2022, the employment-population ratio for persons with a disability was 21.3%, compared to 65.4% for those without a disability. This NDEAM, let’s rekindle our dedication to fostering more inclusion and a greater understanding of disabilities within our workplace. Take a listen to an interview I did about inclusion and accessibility in the workplace: https://lnkd.in/gS74J-_v

Struggling with the decision to join the Eitan social race during wartime and the situation with 133 hostages, I realized it's more than just a race. It's a platform that empowers and uplifts participants, especially the disabled. Participating, I witnessed its true essence- it's not about finishing first, but about proving that everyone, regardless of abilities, can participate. During the race, someone asked, "Why do we run?" The answer lies in our ability to break limits. Initially signing up for the 5km track, I ended up running 7km, realizing that unless we push ourselves, we'll never know our true abilities. What have you done this week to break your limits? #EitanRace #SocialRace #empower #race #run #BeyondOurLimit

We all navigate this world differently. Our own thoughts and beliefs are often the culmination of previous tangible experiences which shape our life journeys. I've said it before and I will say it again - Disability requires nuance. YET This message that using a mobility aid makes you uncool, less desirable, and lazy is damaging (this is not only ableism, but a lot of internalised ableism too). When you have a public platform, and have a rather weighty surname behind you, you have a responsibility to not enforce those negative tropes whether you like it or not. This message co-signs the idea that disabled people are less desirable, uncool and lazy, regardless of its initial intent. What is so sad and disappointing is that this was done unconsciously, and to rounds of applause from the audience. You are NOT less worthy, less desirable or less cool because you use a mobility aid. https://lnkd.in/eyT66Msu

The question addresses both motivation and timeline, raising the question of how long individuals with disabilities will be compelled to advocate for their respect and dignity. With inherent human qualities identical to ours, it is vital to acknowledge them as individuals first, before recognizing their disabilities. Incredibly proud of this team and these superstar athletes! ?? This incredible group of Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) athletes, along with members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Texas (LETR) representing the Dallas Police Department, recently competed in their first regional Topgolf competition together....and, everyone brought home medals!! What makes this even more remarkable is that DPD is the first LETR agency in Texas to establish a Unified LETR Delegation-- and now they're starting a movement. Other law enforcement agencies are starting to follow suit, working to create more opportunities for SOTX athletes in a Unified manner. It's amazing to see how this initiative is spreading and providing a platform for inclusion and support for athletes across the state. Despite the incredibly tough week leading into this Topgolf competition having lost one of their own and with two other officers injured, these DPD officers still showed up with courage and resilience. They supported their athlete partners, cheered them on, encouraged them, and competed alongside them. I can't imagine what they're going through, but I hope spending some time with the team, even for just a few hours, gave these officers some comfort. LETR members are some of the bravest people I know, and it's been an honor to watch this idea of starting an LETR Unified Delegation come to life & a privilege to have helped make it a reality for the Dallas Police Department. None of this would have happened if it wasn't for an officer who came to me and asked this question, "What more can we do for the athletes in our community, and do it in a Unified way?" INCLUSION MATTERS, and being part of a group that celebrates and supports everyone-- regardless of ability-- makes all the difference! If you are a LEO, Fire Rescue member, active duty or retired military member reading this, and want to get involved in the LETR movement with Special Olympics Texas...connect with me, send me a message and I'll be glad to help you and your department out! #inclusionmatters #LETR #SOTX #PlayUnified #LiveUnified #lawenforcement #firerescue #military

In the U.K., many organisations advocate for equality, but as we know, actions speak louder than words. This gap is especially evident in the fitness industry’s appetite for accessibility and in the persistent disparities between support for Paralympic and Olympic athletes. How can we ensure the largest minority group in our country—the disabled community— is treated fairly when these inequalities continue to prevail? It’s time for tangible change and accountability. True equality means creating environments where everyone has access and opportunity, without compromise. Let’s hold ourselves and our industries to higher standards, building an inclusive future that benefits all. https://lnkd.in/e9GvK6AT
