The Power of Small Wins In law school, it’s easy to focus on the big milestones—acing exams, completing internships, or preparing for courtrooms. But I’ve realized that it’s the small wins that keep the journey moving forward. Whether it’s understanding a tricky concept in class, finishing a research task on time, or simply finding clarity in a case, each step counts. These moments remind me that progress is not always dramatic, it’s built on consistent effort and learning. As I continue this path, I’m learning to celebrate the small victories that lay the foundation for bigger achievements. #LawStudent #LegalIntern #LegalJourney

Over the past two weeks I have been absorbing my observations working at the State’s Attorney’s office and here’s what I have learned: 1) Mentorship makes the program. I’ve been blessed enough to have mentors that truly care about my experience and have given me a window into the legal world- something many law offices would never do for an undergraduate student. 2) Be thorough and ask questions. Every internship you take on is a step towards figuring out what your future goals are- do not limit your experience in fear of not “looking as smart” or bothering the older, wiser people there. You are there to learn. 3) Everyone deserves fair representation. This cornerstone of democracy was a concept that used to be foreign to me, and it wasn’t until I started working in this office that I realized just how vital fair trials are to helping establish the truth and coming to an equal and just verdict. 4) Meet as many people as you can. Whenever I have done internships in the past, I’ve tried to keep in my own bubble- fearful of making bad impressions and being a bother. But I have since learned that being in these offices are a chance to make connections that will help you much later on in life. I am incredibly excited for the rest of the summer, to learn more, read more, and ask more questions.

How can interns make a good impression in front of judge? There can be two scenarios in the courtroom- 1. Waiting for the case 2. Assisting the senior when case is being argued 1) In the first scenario, it’s advisable to go through the petition if you’re carrying while waiting for your matter or taking notes or listening seriously to the other cases going on. You may carry pen and notebook or these days interns take notes on phones or tablets. Judges can make out with the body language of others who are sincere and trying to learn versus someone just whiling away time. 2) In the second scenario, it’s advisable to go through your case and trying best to assist senior in the case. If not, sincerely taking notes or understanding the case is very important. Bonus tip: When the case goes against you, don’t get angry or disrespect to court. Your senior will bow down a say obliged. Join him and do the same. Today, you may lose, tomorrow you will win. Today you may sit and watch cases, tomorrow you’ll be arguing the cases. It’s better to have created good impression before the bench rather than crossing them. This summer, Osler welcomed Jesse June-Jack, Madelyn Owusu, Thomas Solomon and Khamecia Williams as part of the Avenue Black Undergraduate Law Internship Program. Now completing its third?year, this industry-wide professional development program invests in the next generation of Black lawyers and leaders. "Programs like this are not a way for a specific race to get special treatment or to get ahead, but rather it’s an opportunity for firms to take accountability. The Avenue program is giving people the opportunity to get into the legal field without having to worry about other people’s preconceived notions of their identity. If I’m looking at the younger version of myself, I never would have thought there would be something like this program, and I think even that version of her would feel more encouraged to enter the legal field.
