???Why Keeping in Touch with Old Colleagues is a Game-Changer!??? Just had an amazing catch-up with my former CIO earlier today, and it got me thinking about the power of staying connected with past colleagues. Here’s my own thoughts as to why it’s so important: Emotional Support: Work friendships provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Staying in touch can be a great source of emotional support. Knowledge Exchange: Tap into the unique insights and industry knowledge of your old teammates. It’s like having a personal think tank! Collaboration Opportunities: Whether it’s a freelance project or a new business venture, having a positive relationship with former colleagues makes collaboration a breeze. Mentorship and Guidance: Experienced colleagues can offer invaluable advice and mentorship, helping you navigate your career path with confidence. Leveraging Past Successes: Successful past collaborations can pave the way for future projects. Keep those connections alive! Positive References: If you’re in a hiring position, having good relationships with former colleagues can make the process smoother and more rewarding. Personal Growth: Interacting with former colleagues can challenge your perspectives and inspire new ideas, leading to personal and professional growth. Boosting Your Reputation: Maintaining good relationships helps you build a positive reputation in your field, opening doors to further opportunities. In short, investing time in nurturing these connections is totally worth it. And while, I'm at it, and I am not looking for a change (I adore my job, the peeps, and the culture at my organization is amazing - check out my earlier post if you missed it below), I know many are - a couple more tidbits about why maintaining relationships is also beneficial... In very exciting news, I'm hiring the City & County of SF's 4th Chief Data Officer. This role leads the DataSF team (6 engineers, data scientists, & program folks), the SF open data program, & citywide data sharing & practice. https://lnkd.in/ggmj67Ve The CDO reports directly to me, & DataSF is part of our 48-person Digital & Data Services team in the City Administrator's office. We're a friendly & diverse team with people from many professional backgrounds. CAO is a general, but very forward-thinking office led by the excellent Carmen Chu (don't approach her about this please! just telling you I love working for her). It's a great place to form partnerships, & DataSF works with many permitting, safety, & critical services departments as well as the Dept of Technology, Controller's Office, & Mayor's Office of Innovation. Couple things you should know: - this is a hybrid job that requires one day per week in-office in downtown SF. Sorry we can’t do remote, but it’s for a pretty cool reason - SF deputizes all City employees as disaster service workers in case of an earthquake/etc. So you need to be near. - from the posting, you need to meet the minimum qualifications (5 years managing programs with data & 3 years managing professional staff) but you don’t need to meet all of the desired qualifications - though of course if you do, tell us! In applying for govt jobs, it’s worth taking a minute to make sure your resume & cover letter respond directly to the parts of the job description you meet. We don’t use AI reviews, but we do have non-technical HR folks. So please, spell out your management exp, for example. If you have broad data experience, some of it technical, policy chops, an informed perspective on AI & emerging tech, ability to present & influence at an exec level & are a great, caring manager & senior peer, we'd love to see your application!
