Growing a business isn’t just challenging—it’s relentless. Recently, I’ve been involved in the marketing and business development of a company that had crossed the three-year mark. They had made serious investments, bringing in a new wave of managers and staff with high hopes for growth. Yet, instead of scaling up, profitability took a step back, and growth hit a wall. Here’s the hard truth I’ve learned over the years: getting people to know you even exist is the toughest hurdle. You can have all the resources, new faces, and fresh ideas, but if your audience doesn’t recognise your value, none of it matters. Anyone claiming their startup has “no competition” is fooling themselves. Update #39 How do you spend your time? The answer to that question will reveal how successful you’ll be. The key is to spend your time on the things that matter. Sounds easy, right? Not exactly. It almost always means you aren’t doing what you’re most passionate about most of the time. Every week, I have to divide my time across three areas: 1?? Product 2?? Market (Clients) 3?? Investors Here’s my golden rule: Time spent with the market must exceed time spent on product and investors—combined. Why? This keeps me from spending too much time in my comfort zone—building product (did I mention how much I love doing this?). Listening to what clients need regularly AND understanding why they need it will allow us to deliver a solution customers can’t fathom living without—and that’s where startups thrive. The hard truth is that we often retreat to what’s comfortable, so you have to intentionally manage your time, set up a system that keeps you focused on exactly the right things, and watch great things happen.
