What if I told you that #AI could be the key to ending global poverty, but might also exacerbate inequality if not carefully managed? This intriguing paradox is just one of many insights I gleaned from the recently published AI for Good Impact Report by International Telecommunication Union and Deloitte. Did you know that AI has the potential to positively impact 100% of the targets for UN #SDG1, while simultaneously risking negative effects on 86% of those same targets? This dual nature of AI - as both a powerful enabler and a potential inhibitor of progress - is a recurring theme throughout the report, and it raises critical questions about how we develop and deploy these technologies. ?? The disparities in AI investment and adoption across regions are striking. While the United States leads with $328.5 billion invested over five years, regions like Africa are making significant strides, with over $2 billion invested across 2,400 AI companies. This highlights both the global nature of AI advancement and the need for more equitable distribution of resources and knowledge. ?? Despite the immense potential, organizations face significant hurdles in adopting AI. The top concerns include regulatory compliance (36%), lack of technical talent (31%), and difficulty managing risks (30%). ???? The report paints a picture of AI not as a job replacer, but as a tool to augment human capabilities. With 71% of executives planning to use AI to enhance their workers' abilities, we're seeing a shift towards a collaborative human-AI workplace. ?? An aspect that particularly resonated with me was the report's emphasis on AI's environmental impact. While AI can drive efficiencies in energy use and environmental monitoring, it also has a significant energy and water footprint. For instance, global AI demand may account for 4.2-6.6 billion cubic meters of water withdrawal by 2027. ?? The report stresses the importance of developing ethical AI frameworks and ensuring interoperability between different governance approaches globally. It's heartening to see the emphasis on human-centric AI development, with initiatives like UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of AI providing crucial guidance. ?? One of the most valuable aspects of the report is its detailed analysis of how AI can impact each of the 17 SDGs. From using AI to optimize water management systems for #SDG6 to leveraging AI for early detection of diseases for #SDG3, the report provides concrete examples of AI's potential positive impacts. The decisions we make today about AI development and deployment will echo through generations. Will we use AI to bridge divides or deepen them? To heal our planet or further strain its resources? To empower the marginalized or entrench existing power structures?

"AI for social good: Improving lives and protecting the planet" is the latest research from McKinsey & Company and QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey where the main question is: "How AI can accelerate progress toward reaching all of the SDGs?" ?? Source: https://lnkd.in/dwqWm9Vd ??"In our 2024 report, we take another look at how AI can and has already become a key part of solutions to benefit people and the planet by mapping innovations and impact to the SDGs. The SDGs comprise 17 goals and 169 targets that aim to improve lives around the world and protect the planet. But the 2023 UN update on progress against the SDGs indicated that the world is on track to meet only 15 percent of SDG targets. In real terms, this means that today: ?? 2.2 billion people lack access to safe water and hygiene; ?? 3.5 billion lack access to safely managed sanitation; ?? roughly 3.3 billion live in environments highly vulnerable to climate change; ?? 750 million are facing hunger." The numbers above should really take a moment. ?? Despite the potential, the report acknowledges the #challenges in scaling AI solutions for social good. These challenges include data quality and governance, accessibility of AI talent, and organizational readiness. The report also discusses the risks associated with AI, such as biases, misinformation, and privacy concerns but it does not merely identify problems, it also provides actionable solutions. ?? I want to be focused for a time on the #Actionable #Solutions: ?? #Partnerships to accelerate impact: the importance of forming partnerships between mission-driven organizations (such as NGOs), governments, the private sector, and academic institutions to leverage AI for social good: Khushi Baby and AirQo are two examples; ?? Supporting the development of #DigitalPublicGoods: development and sharing of digital public goods, such as open data sets, AI models, and software, are critical for democratizing AI: GraphCast, even if made by Google is an example; ?? Improving #DataCollection and #Accessibility: Incentives / budget should be provided for organizations to share their data for social good purposes; ?? #Training programs, scholarships, and partnerships with academic institutions should be arranged for #AIEducation and talent development; ?? Taking an #Inclusive, #UserCentric approach: end users should be involved in the development process as they can build trust and ensure that AI applications meet their needs; ?? Creating a "Business Model" for #NonProfits can reduce reliance on grants and aid, enabling sustainable operations and scaling (#Thorn is an example, https://www.thorn.org/); ?? Last but not least the access to the #Technological #Infrastructures and #AITools. ?? The report points out how #funds #disparities for AI initiatives supporting the SDGs present a significant challenge to achieving equitable progress across all goals. #sustainability
